Double Trouble Stalls Almirola's Run at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 27, 2008) -- A strong start in Sunday's Sprint Cup race took a 180-degree turn for Aric Almirola, who suffered back-to-back misfortunes at Talladega Superspeedway.

Though he started the 500-mile race 28th, Almirola quickly charged to front, running as high as seventh on the 2.66-mile oval.

The U.S. Army driver maintained his position in the lead draft until trouble struck on Lap 51 of 188 when his right-front tire went flat. He was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop under green, and to make matters worse, he was assessed a speeding penalty as he was exiting pit road.

The double whammy sent Almirola to the back of the field. He finished 33rd and was two laps down when the checkered flag waved.

"It's really disappointing, because the U.S. Army Chevy Impala SS was strong from the start," said Almirola, following his ninth career Cup start. "I felt good in the car, I could pass and it was a lot of fun out there. But the tire issue and the pit road speeding penalty pretty much killed our day. We'll bounce back. We're like our soldiers -- we never quit."

Almirola, who is sharing the No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Inc. ride with Mark Martin, is not scheduled to compete again until the June 22 road race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
