NASCAR Suzuka Thunder Special 100 Fact Sheet
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
WHAT: "NASCAR Suzuka Thunder Special 100" demonstration race at Suzuka Circuitland road course in Suzuka City, Japan. A NASCAR invitational demonstration event featuring 27 NASCAR drivers, including 12 from the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
WHERE: The NASCAR Suzuka Thunder Special 100 event will take place on the main east couse (1.4 miles), which is visible in its entirety from the main grandstands.
WHEN: The event is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. local Japan time (Suzuka City, Japan is 14 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time) on Nov. 24.
DISTANCE: The race is scheduled to be a 100 lap (140 miles) event, broken in to two segments. After the completion of the first 50 laps, the top 10 drivers will be inverted for the final 50 laps.
QUALIFYING: The qualifying format will consist of two timed laps with a two-tire pit stop and simulated refueling at the end of the first lap.
POSTED AWARDS: $617,700
WINSTON WORLD CHALLENGE: $50,000 Winston World Challenge bonus awards divided: 1st - $25,000, 2nd - $10,000, 3rd - $7,500, 4th - $5,000, 5th - $2,500 to be paid to those drivers with the most points accumulated in the The Winston Select and the NASCAR Suzuka Thunder Special 100. A $50,000 Winston World Challenge bonus will be paid if Michael Waltrip, winner of the 1996 Winston Select, if he wins the NASCAR Suzuka Thunder Special 100.
TELEVISION: Superstation TBS; Plans call for TBS to televise the event live, the 14-hour time difference would mean a Saturday evening telecast preceded by a pre-race special beginning at 10 p.m. EST. TBS also plans an encore airing the following day.
