HARRISBURG, N.C. (Feb. 18, 1998)

Ross Friesinger, formerly the shop foreman for Stavola Brothers Racing, has been named as the interim crew chief for the No. 8 Circuit City Chevrolets driven by Hut Stricklin.

In addition, Stricklin's father-in-law, Donnie Allison, who won 10 races during his NASCAR Winston Cup Series career, will serve as an interim consultant to the team. He will assist the team in setting up its cars for races at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham this weekend, then at the following events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The announcements followed the resignation of former crew chief Bill Ingle, who officially left the team Monday to become the team manager for the No. 10 Tide Ford team at Rudd Performance Motorsports.

Ingle actually tendered his resignation on Jan. 25, but promised team owners Bill and Joseph Stavola that he would stay on as crew chief until after Speedweeks 1998 at Daytona International Speedway.

"Bill has been in this sport quite a long time, and he's very highly respected," said Donnie Johnson, the Stavola Brothers' team controller and uncle to driver Stricklin. "But I guess with Bill, things just didn't jive right. And when things don't click the way you want them to, you've got to make some changes. It was just time for some changes."

Friesinger served as interim crew chief for the No. 8 Circuit City team when the team and Richard Broome parted ways after 16 races in 1997. Ingle assumed the crew chief duties for the team for the final eight races last year and stayed on through Speedweeks, where the No. 8 car failed to make the field for last Sunday's Daytona 500.

"To say that it was a huge disappointment, not to make the 500, is a huge understatement," Johnson said. "We had a new engine program with a new make of car (the team switched from Ford to Chevrolet in the offseason), and we wanted that part of everything to shine. We just never could get what we wanted in Daytona, and we ended up going home."

The team is hoping Allison will provide a little veteran expertise that might make a difference at "The Rock."

"We're very fortunate to have Donnie helping us out and giving us a hand in getting things going in the right direction," said Johnson, the brother-in-law of both Donnie and Bobby Allison who formerly had a leading role in Bobby Allison's racing operation. "We've got full confidence in Donnie's ability that he can help us get back on the right track.

"We're going to 'The Rock' feeling pretty good about things, and we know what we want to accomplish. We should be alright from here on out."
