Seven Sprint Cup Chase contenders in the Round of 8 received penalties from infractions at Texas Motor Speedway.
Crew chief Todd Gordon of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford was fined $10,000 after Joey Logano’s car failed to have lug nuts properly installed on the car (Sections 12.1; 10.11.3.4).
The teams of Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Martin Truex Jr. and race winner Carl Edwards received written warnings after their cars failed pre-qualifying template inspection three times. For the No. 4 team it was its second warning, the third warning for No. 14 crew. The Nos. 19 and 78 received first warnings.
AJ Allmendinger’s crew failed the Laser Inspection Station (LIS) three times during pre-qualifying and received a written warning and the loss of 15 minutes of practice at PIR. The Nos. 3 and 23 teams each received its third written warnings after failing pre-race LIS twice. Austin Dillon’s crew also earned its third written warning for failing the pre-qualifying LIS twice. The No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing team also failed pre-qualifying LIS twice, but served its penalty in Texas.
Other teams failing pre-qualifying template inspection twice include the Nos. 6 and 11 teams — which served their penalties at Texas — and the Nos. 18, 20, 41 and 83 teams. Kyle Busch’s crew received its second warning, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch earned first warnings.
NASCAR Xfinity Series penalties
Shane Wilson, the crew chief for NXS Chaser Brendan Gaughan, was fined $10,000 and the No. 62 Richard Childress Racing team was assessed with the loss of 10 championship driver and owner points for failing post-race inspection. The team was cited with Sections 12.1; 22.214.171.124.2 (Post-race incorrect ground clearance and/or body heights measurements).
The race finish was considered encumbered per Section 12.10 Encumbered Race Finishes. Gaughan is currently eighth in the NXS standings, 49 points behind leader Daniel Suarez.
Dave Elenz, crew chief for the No. 88 JR Motorsports team, was fined $10,000 and the team penalized 10 championship owner points for failing post-race inspection (Sections 12.1; 126.96.36.199.2, post-race incorrect ground clearance and/or body heights measurements). Kevin Harvick was piloting the No. 88 Chevy in Saturday’s NXS race and finished third.
In both situations — the Nos. 62 and 88 — non-win encumbered finishes would factor into tie-breaker scenarios only.
Kevin Meendering, crew chief for Chaser Elliott Sadler, received a $5,000 fine for the lug nuts not being properly installed on the No. 1 JRM Chevy (Sections 12.1; 10.11.3.4). Sadler is second in the standings, one point behind Suarez.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 NXS entry received its second warning for failing template inspection four times in pre-race inspection. The team received a written warning and will receive a loss of 15 minutes of practice time this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Kyle Busch will drive the No. 18 car this weekend.
The Nos. 3 (RCR) and 20 (JGR) both received their second warnings for failing template inspection three time in pre-race inspection. The Nos. 2 and 88 team failed LIS twice in pre-race inspection. It’s the second warning for RCR’s team and the first for JRM.
Michael S. Rathje and Michael L. Hubert were suspended indefinitely of failing Sections 12.1; 19 of the NASCAR rulebook (Substance Abuse Penalty).
