SONOMA, Calif. (October 18, 2000) - Dodge and Save Mart Supermarkets will join forces as co-title sponsors of the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Sears Point Raceway, it was announced today by raceway officials. The event will be called the Dodge/Save Mart 350.
The partnership continues the raceway's long-standing relationships with Save Mart Supermarkets, a Modesto-based grocery chain, and Dodge, which will make its long-awaited return to NASCAR Winston Cup racing in 2001. The Dodge sponsorship will involve the Bay Area and Northern California Dodge Dealers.
"Save Mart is the longest standing sponsor at this track and their support has been integral to building this event to the level it is today," said Steve Page, president and general manager at Sears Point Raceway. "We are absolutely delighted that they will be returning and joining this partnership with the creative and aggressive marketing forces of the Dodge Motorsports program and the Bay Area and Northern California Dodge Dealers."
Save Mart has been either the title sponsor or co-title sponsor of the NASCAR Winston Cup event at Sears Point since 1992. Save Mart served as title sponsor from 1992-1997 and combined with Kragen Auto Parts as co-title sponsors the last three years.
"I am looking forward to our new partnership with Dodge and another year of collaboration with Sears Point Raceway," said Bob Piccinini, chairman and chief executive officer of Save Mart Supermarkets. "The NASCAR Winston Cup race at Sears Point is one of Save Mart's largest and most successful annual marketing events, and I feel confident the success will continue as we join Dodge and Sears Point for NASCAR 2001."
The sponsorship continues what has been a tremendous return to NASCAR for Dodge Motorsports, which will officially get back into Winston Cup racing in 2001 at the Daytona 500. Dodge will field five teams next season - Evernham Motorsports, Bill Davis Racing, Petty Enterprises, Melling Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing - and it just received formal approval from NASCAR in September for the body templates for its Intrepid R/T race car.
This marks the first title sponsorship of a NASCAR Winston Cup race by Dodge.
"We are really enthusiastic and the Dodge dealers are excited about Dodge getting back into NASCAR. We're expecting a great Winston Cup event at Sears Point," said Peter Gaines, Northern California Dodge Motorsports Marketing Manager. "This new generation of NASCAR fans has not seen a Dodge in a NASCAR event and now they will. It's pretty exciting."
The sponsorship is a one-year deal with major cooperative promotions planned between Sears Point, Save Mart Supermarkets and Dodge. Dodge will also become the "Official Car of Sears Point Raceway."
The 2001 Dodge/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Winston Cup Weekend will take place June 21-24 on the twisting 10-turn, 1.949-mile road course at Sears Point Raceway. This will mark the 13th consecutive year NASCAR visits the scenic Sonoma Valley.
"We couldn't be more thrilled to have such an enthusiastic incumbent in Save Mart, which always does such a terrific job activating the sponsorship," said Tim Schuldt, Vice President of Sales/Marketing at Sears Point. "Plus we are very excited to be part of Dodge's new NASCAR strategy. We look forward to working with these dynamic promotional partners in growing our Winston Cup event and the new Sears Point Raceway."
Sears Point is currently in the midst of a $35 million Modernization Plan that will transform the facility into one of the premier motorsports and entertainment venues in the country. The plan will be completed over the course of the next two years.
