Winston Cup leader Bobby Labonte moved closer to the championship title with a late surge and eventual win in Sunday's UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Benefiting from a wily pit strategy in which he opted for four fresh tires late in the race, Labonte used the better grip to jump then-leader and fellow grad, Jeremy Mayfield, with only seven laps to go. Mayfield would follow him home in second. The win marks the point leader's second Winston Cup victory in just over a month.

Labonte's maximum points move him one step closer to having his head fit for the Winston Cup crown. It didn't hurt that his main rival for the championship finished outside of the Top-10, scoring comparably fewer points and falling further off the pace.

Skip Barber trained Jeff Burton and Steve Park seemed bonded throughout the 200 lap race. After starting from the 38th and 39th positions, the two wove the field in tandem and advanced to finish in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Ward Burton nabbed the last Top-10 position with a tenth place result.

Earlier at Lowe's Motor Speedway, in Busch Series action, Joe Nemechek and Jeff Burton were Top-10 placers, finishing the All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300 in fifth and tenth, respectively. Nemechek, the late race leader, seemed to have the race in the bag but ran out of fuel with only two laps to go.
