MIAMI (November 1, 2000 -- In last year's inaugural Pennzoil 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Ricky Rudd's hopes for a victory went up in smoke when he lost an engine and finished 41st, completing only 184 laps of the 267-lap NASCAR Winston Cup Series event.
In next weekend's Pennzoil 400 presented by Discount Auto Parts, Rudd expects his No. 28 Robert Yates Racing team and the rest of the field to improve their performances on the 1.5-mile track. The Pennzoil 400 weekend, Nov. 10-12, also includes Saturday's Miami 300, the 2000 BNASCAR Busch Series finale, and Friday's Lennox Pole Day.
"I think the next time we go back, you'll see a closer race simply because the guys got a race under their belt,'' Rudd said. "They've learned what the track does and it's now got a pattern. You know what to work on when you go back. I know we'll be better when we go back. I think our competition will too.
"There's nothing like being in a race there when you're actually in competition. You might think you're in good shape, but you really don't know until you get a full race under your belt. Everybody having run there now -- practiced, qualified and raced -- everybody will go back a little smarter.''
Even though he had a disappointing run last year, Rudd still loves racing at in Miami.
"I enjoyed going to Miami,'' Rudd said. "It was my first trip down there because I had never run any Busch races. I enjoyed everything about it. I like the facility and I like the track.''
Rudd says the secret to success in South Florida is having everything right on the race car.
"You're really got to get through the corners, but it's one of those places almost like a Pocono, where the straightaways are so long that you need a lot of horsepower to go down the straightaway,' Rudd said. "You cannot compromise power there at all.''
