Sawing through adversity, No. 24 Crew Chief Robbie Loomis takes home IRWIN Crew Chief of the Week honors.
VERNON HILLS, Ill., June 18, 2002 - Starting his No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet from the 24th position, Jeff Gordon took the green flag at the Sirius Satellite Radio 400 at Michigan International Speedway with a long way to climb to the front of the pack. After overcoming a bit of bad luck, which put the team down a lap midway through the race, No. 24 crew chief Robbie Loomis rallied his troops and gave Gordon the edge he needed to charge to a fifth-place finish. Thanks to his crew's efforts in the pits this past weekend, Loomis takes home this week's IRWIN"Rough to the Finish" Award.
After climbing as high as fourth position, the No. 24 team got caught a lap down when a caution flag came out on lap 98 in the midst of green flag stops. This could not have come at a worse time for Gordon, who had just pitted on lap 94 and now sat at the tail end of the lead lap in 12th position. But on lap 137, prayers were answered as the third caution of the day came out because of a blown engine in the No. 22 car of Ward Burton, allowing Gordon to come around and pick up the tail end of the lead lap cars. From there, Gordon, who had been running strong all day, was able to maneuver through slower traffic and finish in fifth-place, his fifth top-five finish this season.
"I'm real happy the way this team stayed with it today," said Loomis. "We got stuck a lap down and had to fight our way back, and these guys did an excellent job keeping Jeff pumped up and in position to finish strong. It was a hard fought battle, and this crew deserves all the credit."
Each week throughout the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup season, IRWIN, makers of professional power tool accessories like MARATHON PLUS saw blades and SPEEDBOR flat bits, is partnering with Performance Racing Network to honor the crew chief who had the toughest day in the pits, but still managed to help his team to a strong finish.
"IRWIN is proud to honor the hard-working crew chiefs of NASCAR Winston Cup Racing with this award," said Chris Connington, Vice President, Marketing, IRWIN. "Much like our line of bits and blades optimize a power tool's performance, these professionals have had to perform in all types of conditions, with many surprises and under intense pressure. Through the course of the race the selected crew has been able to optimize their car's performance."
The IRWIN Rough to the Finish Award includes an assortment of tools for the crew chief and a $250 check donated to the Ellerbe, NC Educational Fund in the racing team's name. The year-end winner of the crew chief points standings will win a $5,000 check donated to the Fund. Race fans wanting to make a contribution to the Fund may do so by sending it to the Ellerbe, NC Educational Fund, PO Box 443, Ellerbe, NC 28338.
In addition to the crew chief award, IRWIN is also sponsoring the weekly nationally syndicated radio show,"Fast Talk with Benny Parsons", throughout the upcoming year.
"Working with Benny Parsons and the PRN family is a natural fit for the IRWIN bits and blades line," said Connington. "The NASCAR fan-base is a hands-on group of people that are driven to do it themselves, if they can. IRWIN bits and blades are engineered to last long and provide precise cuts that will help professionals and DIYers do their best work."
