RICHMOND, Va. (March 2, 1997)
Rusty Wallace made the following comments following the Pontiac Excitement 400
Analyzing the race:
"At the start of the race, I kind of got high on the race track and I chopped down on Ricky Rudd accidentally. It was kind of my fault I got into him. I spun and had to start at the back of the pack and work my way back to the front. But I like doing it that way. When you can start 41st and go to the front two or three times during the race, it's great.
"I'd like to thank all my loyal fans for showing up here today. They're a bunch of great people and we love them. Don't ever forget about the fans. Man, I learned about that the hard way.
"It was a pretty special day today because I told everybody this year we're going to get in, concentrate and work hard. The guys don't give up at all (even with) another miserable finish in the Daytona 500. We bounced back and got a few more points.
"I had a lot of problems with (Jeff) Gordon there (at races end). I don't know what was going on there. But I'd like to congratulate Dale Jarrett and Todd Parrott and their entire crew. They were the car to beat besides mine. They made it tough on us today. I'm glad a couple of Fords were up there today for a change."
On the last restart:
"You think about those old short-track days. The guys told me to get the tires cleaned off real good. Really get ready for that thing. I said, Well, I'll put the old patented Rusty Wallace trick on them and see if it works,' I laid back about a car length and a half. Just about the time I thought he was going to pick it up, I nailed it. It worked out perfect. It doesn't always work out that way. I was lucky today."
