RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY TO HOST OFFICIAL NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES TEST FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR IN 2007
Richmond, VA (September 25, 2006)--Proving once again that it is one of the most prestigious stops on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series circuit, Richmond International Raceway has been selected as one of only seven tracks to host an official series test during the 2007 season. After receiving input and recommendations from NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series crew chiefs, America's Premier Short Track was chosen by NASCAR to host testing for the second consecutive year.
"To be selected two years in a row to host testing reinforces how important and prestigious of a stop Richmond International Raceway is on the NASCAR schedule," said track president Doug Fritz. "Last year's test session at Richmond International Raceway was a great success for the drivers, teams, media and fans in the grandstands and we are thrilled to have everyone back in 2007. Being chosen as the only short track to host test sessions two consecutive years is more proof that Richmond International Raceway is not only America's Premier Short Track, but also one of the most significant venues in all of NASCAR."
Richmond International Raceway will host NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series testing April 3-4, 2007. The track will maintain its long-standing policy of allowing fans to watch testing for free. In April 2006, fans were treated to three days of testing, which featured virtually every NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver.
NASCAR instituted a new track testing policy in 2006 that pre-sets a schedule for when and where NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series tests are to be conducted. The scheduled tests are the only opportunities teams will have to test at NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series tracks. The policy was implemented to serve as an aid to maintain better overall competitive balance for the teams and contain costs.
The 2007 NASCAR season at Richmond International Raceway features two NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series doubleheaders "under the lights" May 4-5 and September 7-8. For more information, fans can visit www.rir.com or call 1-866-455-RACE (7223).
