NO-GO FROM THE GET-GO: The 50th start of Speed's Sprint Cup career went nowhere as planned. He started 12th and immediately fought handling problems around Richmond's .75-mile, D-shaped oval. He got the free pass 50 laps in, and the immediate changes in the pits were "unbelievable." But a furious pace by the leaders quickly put the No. 82 a lap down. By the time the checkered flag waved, Speed was seven laps in arrears in 35th.

BES I: "We will be fine. We will have races like that, but it makes it even sweeter when we bounce back from it." -- Speed

VITAL SIGNS: Dropped four spots to 25th in the driver standings. He's 37 points behind 20th place.

STAT THAT MATTERS: With Richmond behind him, Speed heads to Darlington, where he finished 13th in his first-ever NASCAR race at the tricky, egg-shaped oval in the sand hills of South Carolina. That, however, was a Nationwide Series race. A day later, he finished 26th in a Cup car.

83. BRIAN VICKERS

NOT GREAT, NOT TERRIBLE: Vickers rolled off from the ninth-starting position — his best qualifying effort of the season — but lost valuable real estate after a pit stop on lap 45 for a left-front "packer" that was installed to prevent the splitter from dragging. He fell a lap down on lap 114, kept digging, got the lap back 40 laps later and rode out the remainder of the race just inside the top 20. He eventually finished a lap down in 20th.

POSITIVE VIBES II: "We learned something for the next race. We lost it tonight after putting that packer in toward the beginning of the race. Track position was very important tonight and we were never able to get back what we lost. But all in all, it was a good effort by everyone. For the first time running this package, we definitely have something to build on." -- Vickers

VITAL SIGNS: A 2009 Chase participant who clinched a spot in NASCAR's postseason at Richmond last fall, Vickers ranks 24th in points -- 194 out of the top 12.

STAT THAT MATTERS: Even though the run was less than stellar, Vickers' streak of consecutive top-20 finishes at Richmond stands at three. Before the spring race in 2009, he hadn't finished better than 24th in the previous eight races.

UP NEXT: Showtime Southern 500, Saturday, May 8, Darlington Raceway, Darlington, S.C.
