Truex Comes Home 16th at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (Sep. 7, 2008) -- Martin Truex Jr. appeared to be working on a solid top-5 finish in Sunday's Chevy Rock and Roll 400 - a race run a day later than scheduled due to rains from Tropical Storm Hanna.

Unfortunately, damaged sustained to Truex's No.1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet during a late-race pit stop affected the handling on the car, and the Mayetta, N.J. native had to settle for a 16th-place finish.

Truex came down pit road when the caution flag flew on lap 358 due to a spin by the No. 66 of Scott Riggs. Truex, running seventh at the time, took two tires and fuel. The Dale Earnhardt Inc. driver was first off of pit road, but not until after making contact with the No. 96 of Ken Schrader. The right front of Truex's Chevy was damaged and it affected the handling of the car the remainder of the race. Compounding the situation was the fact that many of the lead cars took four tires.

Truex continued to battle his way around the 0.75-mile Richmond International Raceway, but the handling only became worse and the leaders made short work of the No. 1 car.

Truex remained 17th in 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup points.

"The car was good on long runs, but it just wouldn't handle on the restarts," Truex said. "Bono (crew chief Kevin Manion) made the right call when we only took two (tires), but we got into the No. 96 leaving pit road and that really hurt us.

"The car wasn't that great but we kept working on it and we were about to have a good day. Things just went bad for us there at the end."
