How was your lap? "That was a good lap. We're really happy with that lap. We didn't do a lot of qualifying setup during practice. The first lap was a little bit tight so we knew on our second lap we had to get all that we could. We made it up on that second lap. We'll be alright." How important would it be to start up front? "I think qualifying position here is everything here. Any time you can start up front or pass a guy you've got an advantage." Are you playing it safe tomorrow night or going for it? "We're going for it. We're going all out. We've got to do all that we can do. We've got to try hard. You have to be smart and not get in trouble and tear the fenders up on it, just have a good car for the end of the race and be in position to win."
RUSTY WALLACE, NO. 2 MILLER LITE DODGE CHARGER
Talk about your qualifying lap? "That was a pretty good lap for us. I'm pretty happy with that, I really am. I don't know where it is going to end up, but going out fifth is not good because the track is going to get cooler and cooler. But, there's nothing you can do about that. Today was a nice day today, as far as the way the car ran. We tried a lot of different things and hit on some things that made me feel real good today.
What would it do to go on and get a win here? "Goal number one the Chase, goal number two was to win a championship and goal number three was to win some races. I'm on track right now with all of them. This is our last time here at Richmond, and this is a great track. I've won here seven times, six or seven, and I'd love to top it off with another win tomorrow night. Is the pressure off now that you've made the Chase? "Yeah, I'm glad I'm not like those other cats with all that pressure, that's for sure."
STERLING MARLIN, NO. 40 COORS LIGHT DODGE CHARGE
How was your qualifying lap? "Well, we improved a whole lot from practice. We were just too tight in the center. We changed about 20 things from practice. This car has just run poorly all year and it's just tight today. We just haven't been able to get the car balanced like we needed. We've made some improvements. We'll just go as hard as we can go tomorrow night. At the least the Vols aren't playing tomorrow, so I don't have to worry about that."
KASEY KAHNE, NO. 9 DODGE DEALERS/UAW DODGE CHARGER
You picked up a lot from practice -- what changes did you make? "That was a good pick-up for us from practice. We're real happy with that. I think the track got better this afternoon. I was loose earlier, sliding around a little bit. I don't really know what changes they made. They talked to Jeremy's guys and just made some changes. How important is qualifying position? "It's real important here for pit selection. It's a long race and you can do a lot with a car if you're back in the pack, for sure you can do a lot with that, but pit selection is real big." Do you feel any pressure to repeat your win here? "Not really. Not at all. I'd like to win, but I've wanted to win all year long. We don't have anything to think about this weekend other than winning the race and making sure Jeremy makes the Chase." Are you going to try to help him in the race? "If he needs help late in the race, I'll help him. Otherwise, he can take care of it himself."
CASEY MEARS, NO. 41 TARGET DODGE CHARGER
How was that lap? "It was okay, not great. We were really loose in and really tight in the center and really loose off. It never was really in the race track. We picked up pretty good from where we were in practice. It looks like everybody did because the track cooled off so much. We're knee deep in a starting spot, I'm not sure where we are right now, but I think we'll be okay." What can you do different tomorrow? "It's hard to say. We were talking about that on the grid and these days stuff is so different and some of the c changes are acting so different than they normally do and the tires are different than they have been in the last couple of years, so sometimes, traditionally, you get tighter and tighter as the track cools off. The last couple of races now, we've gotten looser as the track cools off. Typically, this track will get tight and it seems to be getting looser. We've got a pretty good race car so we should be alright."
JEFF GREEN, NO. 43 CHEERIOS/BETTY CROCKER DODGE CHARGER
How was that lap? "It was pretty good, but we were too loose. I got scared and we pushed in our mock-up run. This track usually gets a little bit freer when we go to qualify but it cooled down a little too much. It made me too loose to use the gas. It's still a good lap for us but I wanted to be closer to the front. I think we're starting about 19th now. The car is really good in race mode so I think we'll be in good shape. I like this track and wish we could race here every week."
DAVID STREMME, NO. 39 NAVY DODGE CHARGER
How was your qualifying lap? "The Navy Dodge is pretty good in race trim. I think some of it is me being nervous and some of it was that probably should have gone out on stickers. It's good, we'll be all right tomorrow. The main thing was for us to get in. We've got 400 laps tomorrow, so we should be okay."
RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 12 MOBIL1/alltel DODGE CHARGER
How was that lap? "It was good, not great. We wish we could have been faster, but we'll just see if we can put 400 laps behind us tomorrow night. I think we've got a good shot and a pretty good car. We'll just have to see what we can do with it."
