Gilliland Looking to Fly on Fast Track
Charter Air Returns to No. 37 Car
Statesville, N.C. (September 7, 2010) - David Gilliland had a good run going at the May 1 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway - until he was hit by a competitor and suffered damage to his car. Going back to the 0.75-mile oval this week, Gilliland is ready to get back to the fan-favorite track and bring back a better result. The team carries momentum after a top-20 finish last weekend at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway.
This weekend's event will be Gilliland's ninth start at the 0.75-mile oval. His best Richmond finish is 18th.
Comments from Charter Air Transport Driver David Gilliland on Richmond International Raceway and the Returning Sponsor:
"Richmond is a fun track. It's a short track and a place that a lot of drivers really like. I felt like we had a good car there earlier this year, but we had some stuff happen during the race. So, we'll be looking to build on what we learned in the spring and we expect to finish better than we did the last time.
"Night-racing at Richmond is one of those fan-favorite events. It always looks like it's sold out, and it's fun to race in front of a full house. It's kind of like Bristol. You hear all the fans say they like being able to be right on top of the action and see everything going on up close. It definitely has that intimate, short-track feel to it, and short-track racing is always fun. It always seems like there's a lot of excitement leading into the 'Chase' and I think that's why the fans like it.
"We had a great weekend in Atlanta last week. Peter Sospenzo and the team did a great job to make our Taco Bell Ford competitive. It was our first race together as a team and I think we clicked really well. To come away with a top-20 finish the first time out was a great feeling and I think we can only build on that and get even better. I'm excited to get back to the track and see what we can do at Richmond.
"It's great to have Charter Air Transport on the car again. They were with us earlier in the year at Atlanta and we had a really fast car, so maybe they bring us a little extra speed. I'm definitely happy to have them back.
"We've flown Charter Air to the races and we've always been able to depend on them and not have to worry about anything. My family sometimes flies with me, so they're not just taking care of me, they're taking care of my family, too. And they've always been very professional and have done a great job."
