BARENAKED LADIES TO PERFORM PRIOR TO CHEVY ROCK & ROLL 400 AT RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
Richmond, VA (July 13, 2006)--Chevrolet and Richmond International Raceway announced today that Barenaked Ladies will perform a pre-race concert prior to the sold-out Chevy Rock & Roll 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at America's Premier Short Track, set for Saturday, September 9 "under the lights." Additionally, NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick's #29 GM Goodwrench Chevy Monte Carlo SS will feature a special paint scheme depicting images of the band.
Barenaked Ladies will showcase a mix of new and classic hits on the frontstretch at Richmond International Raceway, moments before the final race before the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. Once the checkered flag drops, the field will be set for who is in and who is out for a chance at the championship.
"The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 is one of the most prestigious races on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series schedule," said track president Doug Fritz. "The Rock & Roll concept, along with the drama of it being the final race before The Chase, will again show why Richmond International Raceway is America's Premier Short Track."
"It's a pretty defining race. Over the years we've had a few different bands on the cars and Chevy has done a great job sponsoring the race in coordination with Richmond," said Harvick, who has three top-five and five top-10 finishes in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series competition at Richmond International Raceway. "This year we have the Barenaked Ladies on the car and I think it's going to be a great fit. These guys have been a lot of fun to hang out with today and they are full of excitement and energy."
This is the seventh consecutive year that Chevrolet will be the title sponsor of the fall race at Richmond International Raceway and the fourth year the race will carry a Rock & Roll theme. With more than 107,000 fans attending, the race will mark the 30th consecutive sell out of a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series event at the track, dating back to 1992.
Barenaked Ladies, who is no stranger to sell out crowds, will release its first original album in three years--Barenaked Ladies Are Me--on September 12 on their own imprint label, Desperation Records. The concert will be simulcast on XM Satellite Radio.
"We're really excited about being involved," said Barenaked Ladies lead vocalist Ed Robertson. "It's an exciting time for us. We have a new record coming out just a few days later. We'll be performing at the start/finish line, playing some new material and some old material. We know that we and NASCAR share a lot of fans and it will be a great day, and we hope we bring Kevin Harvick some good luck."
"We're totally excited," added Barenaked Ladies drummer Tyler Stewart. "The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 is exciting to us because it combines music and racing. I've never been to a NASCAR race so I'm totally excited about that. Having your image on a race car is hilarious. If someone said to me, 'One day you're going to play for 100,000 people at a race track and there will be a driver in contention for winning the race with your image on his car,' I would have said 'yeah right.'"
Today's announcement took place at the XM Satellite Radio studios in Washington, DC. Additional musical/artist-themed Chevrolets that will be participating in the event will be announced later.
