NASCAR Winston Cup points race closest in history on road to miami; first-ever NASCAR championship weekend comes to Homestead-Miami Speedway.

MIAMI, FL (September 10, 2002) - With ten races to go in the closest points race in NASCAR Winston Cup Series history, and tight points races in the NASCAR Busch and Craftsman Truck Series, all roads lead to Miami and the first-ever NASCAR Championship Weekend, November 14-17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

In the closest points race in NASCAR Winston Cup Series history, points leader Sterling Marlin currently leads Mark Martin by seven points, while just 118 points separate the top five drivers (Marlin, Martin, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart). Moreover, ten drivers are within 271 points of the Winston Cup lead.

To put this year's points race in perspective, eventual NASCAR Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon held a 222-point lead over his nearest competitor with ten races to go in 2001. Furthermore at this point last season, the top-five drivers were separated by 466 points and the top ten drivers were separated by 670 points.

The NASCAR Busch and Craftsman Truck Series are also in the midst of tight points battles this season on the Road to Miami. In the Busch Series, points leader Greg Biffle leads Jason Keller by 78 points with eight races to go, while eight drivers are within 195 points of the points lead with six races left in the Craftsman Truck Series.
