JARRETT PULLS AWAY AT PENNSYLVANIA 500

LONG POND, Pa. -- Dale Jarrett had the power Sunday, pulling away from the normally potent cars of Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton at the end to win by three seconds at the 200-lap NASCAR Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. Gordon held off the closing Burton to bring his Chevrolet home in the midst of an otherwise all-Ford top five. Burton was followed by his Roush Racing teammates Ted Musgrave and Mark Martin.

Burton led with 24 laps to go, but the fresher tires of Jarrett gave him an edge, and Gordon was able to ride by Burton in Jarrett's wake. Burton began to close on Gordon, but still had substantial ground to close when the checkered flag waved.

The win is Jarrett's third of the season, but his first since Darlington in March. Heading into Sunday, Jarrett had four top-10s in his last five starts. Jarrett was highly complimentary of crew chief Todd Parrott's call for four tires during the final pit stop, while his competitors took on only two tires to try to gain track position.

"Todd did a great job calling for four tires," said Jarrett, who earned his 11th career victory and his seventh win in his last 49 starts. "We had a good car, and we had been changing four tires on every pit stop, so we didn't want to do something different at the end of the race.

"I had an awesome car, the best engine I ever had. Even when I messed up on the track, I could make it good."

Despite a rash of cautions, Jarrett led the field by setting a pace of 142.068 miles per hour -- just off the record mark of 144.892 mph set by Rusty Wallace last year. Gordon, who leads the Winston Cup series with seven victories, broke his string of back-to-back poor races with his 13th top-five of the season.

"It's a good race for us today," Gordon said. "We're happy to come home second and get some momentum. We had to fight hard all day today."

Dale Earnhardt, pre-race points leader Terry Labonte and pole-sitter Joe Nemechek were involved in a multi-car accident following a restart on lap 127. Earnhardt battled his way back to a 12th-place finish, with Nemechek 21st and Labonte 35th.

Labonte will fall to third in the points standings, with Gordon returning to the lead. Martin will slide into second with, Jarrett in fourth. Burton rounds out the top five.
