U.S. Army team finishes 31st at Pocono

LONG POND, Pa. (June 8, 2003) - Mike Wallace could not find the right balance in Sunday's Pocono 500 and the result for the U.S. Army driver was a 31st-place finish, the same position he started the 200-lap race.

Wallace wrestled with handling problems as soon as the green flag dropped, and no matter what pit road adjustments were made to his black and gold Pontiac, nothing seemed to click.

"It was a rough day," said Wallace. "There's not much more to say. We couldn't seem to find the proper handle and we struggled to get whatever finish we could. This is not indicative of what this team can do."

With Saturday's two practice sessions canceled at Pocono Raceway due to rain, there was no data to tune the U.S. Army car in race trim conditions for the odd-shaped 2.5-mile oval.

"That didn't help our cause," commented Wallace, who is subbing for the injured Jerry Nadeau. "When you have a cold turkey setup, it's like rolling the dice. Unfortunately, we didn't come up with the right numbers."
