RUSTY WALLACE (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger) -- 14th fastest in first practice
COMMENTS AFTER FIRST PRACTICE SESSION "Coming off the corner is the same. The horsepower is the same. I thought (not shifting) would really bother me, but you're working less hard out there. I keep finding myself reaching up for the gear shifter and wanting to pull it down, but it's all the way down already. Right now I'm just working hard on the handling. The soft tire and shorter spoiler is a lot different handling package than we had here last year, so we're working hard to get that corrected. Every single time I come to Pocono it's always different. It's never the same. It's always a different setup every time, and this is no different. My car is running fast, but it's not comfortable. I've got to get it more comfortable, get it calmed down, get in the racetrack. Right now, I'm bouncing around and sliding around, but I'm running quick. That's good. If you have the speed and you're not feeling real good at least you've got one of them.
"You don't have much gear ratio. You've got a 389 gear compared to a 411 so you're not coming off the corner near as hard. Qualifying speed is going to be way off from last year probably.
"It's easier not to shift, and I've won races here shifting and not shifting. You just don't do anything when you don't shift. You just drive it."
RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger) -- Second fastest in first practice
POST-PRACTICE COMMENTS -- "It was kind of boring (not shifting). There wasn't a whole lot of action. We're going to tune on the car for the second practice and try to make it good on the long runs. The track is a lot rougher than it's ever been, so we'll see how it works out. It all depends on what the weather is like tomorrow as to whether we've got a chance for the pole or not. Qualifying takes a long time here, and we go out toward the end, so if it gets cooler or warmer or whatever. The race will probably be the same as last year -- a track position race. Any time you have a change everybody is going to complain. We'll just have to wait and see how it works out, but it'll put less stress on the motors."
