Craven replaces Irvan at Phoenix

PHOENIX (Oct. 25, 1998) Ricky Craven will drive the No. 36 Skittles Pontiac in Sunday's Dura Lube/Kmart 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Craven will substitute for Ernie Irvan, who is recovering from an accident he endured Oct. 11 in the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

"I feel like the car is better than I am right now," Irvan said. "We're starting in the back and a driver change would no doubt put us down a lap. I don't want to do that to this team, because I think that the Skittles Pontiac is a stronger race car than that. I hope to be 100 percent by Rockingham. I'm going day by day, week by week."

"We're opting to sacrifice this year's driver points for owner points," MB2 Motorsports General Manager Jay Frye said. "If something happens in Daytona in February, you need to have owner points to fall back on."

Craven drove the No. 36 Grand Prix in the final "Happy Hour" practice Saturday, making him eligible to start the car in Sunday's race. He said he has no further commitment to the Skittles team beyond this week.

Craven, the Maine native, drove the No. 36 car to an eighth-place finish in last week's Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway after relieving Irvan on lap 13.

At that time Irvan was eager to maintain his standing in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver point standings. Irvan was 14th going into the Pepsi 400 and, with Craven's help, moved to 13th coming into the race at Phoenix.
