FONTANA, Calif. (April 30, 1998)
On May 3, Kyle Petty will strap himself into the Hot Wheels Pontiac Grand Prix and chase the checkered flag in the California 500 presented by NAPA.
But on May 4, Petty will trade in his racing wheels to jump on a "Hog" a Harley Davidson that is.
Kyle, along with father Richard "The King" Petty and more than 125 other motorcyclist will begin a cross-country journey beginning California, to help raise money for children's charities and the Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary.
Traveling more than 2,600 miles, across 11 states, both Pettys and their crew will make "Pit Stops" at children's hospitals in Lexington, Ky., and Kansas City, Mo., to sign autographs and to meet patients and their parents.
Over the past three years, the Kyle Petty Charity Ride has helped raise more than $1 million for children's charities and NASCAR Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary -- an organization that provides medical assistance and financial help for all Winston Cup drivers and crew members suffering sever injury or tragedy.
The cross-country journey begins May 4 in Ontario, Calif., and concludes May 10 with an arrival celebration at Kyle Petty's farm in Trinity, N.C. In addition, a live concert featuring the Marshal Tucker Band, will conclude the cross-country charity ride.
The Petty family has had NASCAR racing in their blood for four generations and more than 50 years, and the Petty's traditions and words of wisdom have been passed down the line.
Not only have they learned how to take the lead, they have also learned to give back their fans. This lesson has been taught over many years.
Kyle's mother and grandmother taught him early on that if you are blessed with your health and a career that gives you notoriety, you need to give something back to those less fortunate.
With this in mind, Kyle began his mission of helping others and created the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America.
For the past three years, NASCAR drivers, fans and celebrities have traded their stock cars in for motorcycles and helped raise money for children's charities and the Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary.
This year's NASCAR celebrities participating include Geoff Bodine, Harry Gant, Butch Mock, Ken Schrader and the latest Petty racing addition, 17-year-old Adam Petty.
