NOTES AND QUOTES Busch Pole Qualifying North Wilkesboro Speedway April 12, 1996
BOBBY HAMILTON(No. 43 STP Pontiac Grand Prix): "This doesn't surprise me That's the way it is every time. That's just the way short track racing is. If you knew what to do to pick up five- thousandths of a second that might get you the pole. You go as hard as you can go and hope for the best We ended up quickest in practice, but practice doesn't pay anything. When it comes show time some of these guys can pull a little more out of it. we did the best we could do eve had a good setup I can't think of anything else that would have made the car any better. We got off the corner good, rolled through the middle good, and what you do from there is see who beats you on interval times. This is a good race car It goes to a wide variety of tracks like Michigan, Indy, Martinsville It does well every where we carry it. The keep bringing a different tire here, and you just have to keep working with a different setup. Any time you come to a short track and qualify in the top-25 you should be happy because it could be a lot worse."
KYLE PETTY (No. 42 Coors Light Pontiac Grand Prix): "That was good. That was about what we ran in practice. We wanted to save our last set of tires for second round qualifying with the superior qualifying efforts I put in each and every week on the Winston Cup circuit We ran pretty good in practice. We felt like we had decent times. We knew we didn't have a shot at the pole, but we felt like we had decent times. We went ahead and splurged and used our second set of tires because we had to get a good lap in then. We've had a good car here just about every time we've run here. Some places I like, some places I don't It's pretty much well documented which places I don't like If they take Wilkesboro off the schedule I'm going to kind of hate to see it leave I kind of like the place."
RICK MAST (No. 1 Hooters Pontiac Grand Pris): "That wasn't very sporty I think we'll be all right Sunday. We were a little bit quicker than that in practice and hoped to pick up a little more speed, but we didn't. The car was just a little too loose in qualifying."
JOHNNY BENSON (No. 30 Pennzoil Pontiac Grand Prix): "I didn't think it was all that good a run. But it tams out that was the quickest we ran all day. The guys are doing a great job. This is just taking a little longer getting used to than I figured it would."
WARD BURTON (No. 22 MBNA Pontiac Grand Prix): "From the beginning this morning the car kept tightening up. Then the last set of tires in practice made me a little loose. So we raised the track bar and I pushed like a freight train. Unfortunately, all our tires are used up and hardly anybody goes faster on the second day here." -30-
