Biffle's Pit Crew scores victory at Michigan
Greg Biffle's pit crew captured its first win in the McDonald's Drive-Thru Pit Championship fueled by POWERade by scoring the victory in Sunday's (Aug. 17) race at Michigan International Speedway (MIS).
The victory, worth $20,000, was the result of Biffle's No. 16 Grainger Ford spending the least amount of time on pit road during the 220-lap, 400-mile race at MIS. Biffle's car, owned by Roush Racing, was on pit road for 206.124 seconds.
The series point-leading pit crew - Michael Waltrip's team - finished second in Michigan (217.808) and Kurt Busch's team was third (228.306).
"The Grainger Team has been working around the clock to improve all aspects of our program, and it's nice to see that their hard work is paying off on the track and on pit road," said Biffle, who posted a fourth-place finish at Michigan. "They've done a great job all season and I'm really proud of their efforts.
"Everything came together for us in Michigan and everyone on the team stepped up to the plate. Our stops were awesome all day and we kept ourselves in position by making the right calls with adjustments, having solid pit strategy and of course having great pit stops. My hats off to the guys and they definitely deserve this award."
Biffle's over-the-wall crew consists of: Adam Emmert (front tire changer), John Gaynor (front tire carrier), Jeff Merkel (jackman), Mike Hillman (rear tire changer), T.J. Hamilton (rear tire carrier), Rodger Ueltschi (gasman) and Mike Abner (catch can). The team's crew chief is Randy Goss and Justin Hines handles the windshield duties.
During each 2003 NASCAR Winston Cup points event, the participating team whose car spends the least amount of aggregate time off the race track will be named the weekly winner of the McDonald's Drive-Thru Pit Championship fueled by POWERADE, provided the team's driver takes the green flag at the beginning of the event and the checkered flag at the conclusion of the event. A timing line at the entrance and exit of pit road triggers the car's transponder and records the total time spent off the race track.
The point distribution per race is: 43 for first place, descending in increments of one. The team that records the most standing points during the season will receive a $200,000 bonus at the end of the year.
The McDonald's Drive-Thru Pit Championship fueled by POWERADE is the largest monetary contingency program in NASCAR history.
