===== Taurus templates almost ready (Bob Zeller, Staff Writer, Greensboro News & Record)

(Story was dated October 15, 1997)

The final templates for the new 1998 Ford Taurus race car will be finished this week and the teams should be able to start building cars next week, a Ford official says.

But some Ford teams still believe that doesn't leave enough time to get adequately prepared for the 1998 season.

"We're finishing up" Preston Miller, Ford's Winston Cup manager, said Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway. "The stamped sheet metal just came in. And we expect to have the templates done and approved next week."

Miller said Ford teams should be able to purchase models of the templates from a racing supplier by the end of the week and get busy building new cars the first of next week.

"NASCAR is still involved in the process and has been talking with us on a daily basis," he said. "There's no arguments and no real decision points left."

The templates show the outline of the car's body design at various points on its surface. NASCAR uses templates routinely during inspections to check that the race cars of all three makes are the proper shape.

Robin Pemberton, Rusty Wallace's crew chief, said it's about time the templates are done.

"We're going to need 10 or 12 cars and it takes two to three weeks to build a new car," Pemberton said. "How many weeks is that? That's 30 weeks of building. How many weeks in the off-season. Where does that put you in the scope of things?

"We're going into the off-season and we're going to be busier now than we've been in probably six years." ===== Brewco Motorsports, Inc. has announced it will increase its presence in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in the 1998 season, competing full-time. Scot Walters, 29, of Louisville, Ky., will pilot the No. 37 Chevrolet and will challenge for the 1998 Cintas Rookie of the Year Award. (NASCAR Online) ===== Joe Gibbs logged a lot of miles walking up and down the sidelines on Sundays while coaching the NFL's Washington Redskins. That's nothing, he says, compared to what he'll be doing this weekend, providing his son J.D. makes the field for the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division ACDelco 200 at North Carolina Motor Speedway. J.D. Gibbs, 28, will make his debut in the NASCAR Busch Series Friday when he attempts to qualify for Saturday's 200-mile event at "The Rock." He'll be driving his own car, a Pontiac with the No. 42 on the side and sponsored by Carolina Turkey. (NASCAR Online) ===== All three of NASCAR's national divisions will have their 1997 season-ending banquets broadcast to a national audience.
