http://www.mciracing.mci.com/as1_11_12.html ===== Following stories are from NASCAR Online: ===== ESPN will launch a year-long celebration of NASCAR's 50th anniversary during the live telecast of the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Awards Banquet from the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City on Dec. 5. Special programs and features in ESPN/ESPN2 racing programming will continue throughout the 1998 racing season, the 50th in NASCAR's history, concluding at the 1998 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Awards Banquet.
A five-part documentary series will review NASCAR history, its growth, personalities and impact. The one-hour programs will be aired weekly on Friday nights beginning Jan. 16, leading to the 1998 Daytona 500, the season's first race, scheduled for Feb. 15 at Daytona International Speedway.
Other NASCAR 50th Anniversary elements will include a "This Day in NASCAR History" segment as part of ESPN2's "RPM 2Night" throughout 1998.
The NASCAR 50th Anniversary logo will be unveiled during ESPN's live telecast of the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Awards Banquet Dec. 5 at 9 p.m. EST. ===== In two other NASCAR-related programming announcements:
ESPN's SpeedWeek, the longest-running motorsports magazine show on television, will come to an end tonight after a 14-year run. The 661st and final episode of ESPN SpeedWeek will air Friday night at 12:30 a.m. (Saturday morning) EST and will re-air at 5:30 a.m. EST Saturday. The show has been hosted since its inception by by cable ACE award nominee Bob Jenkins, ESPN's NASCAR play-by-play announcer and the radio voice of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Jenkins was recognized for his dedication to the sport on Nov. 11 with the "Sagamore of the Wabash" award from Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon. This award is the highest honor an Indiana resident can receive. Jenkins will continue his duties with ESPN's NASCAR events, ESPN2 Thunder series and IMS. ===== Race fans can relive many great ESPN/NASCAR Winston Cup moments when ESPN2 presents NASCAR Marathons on Christmas and New Year's. The Christmas marathon will begin on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, at 9 p.m. and will nclude eight races over 27 hours. The latter marathon will begin at 6:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, and will cover 10 aces in 31 hours. ESPN's Jenkins and Benny Parsons will appear throughout the marathons, adding their insight and erspective. The lineup of races will be announced at a later date.
