NASCAR Fans E-mail List
It gives me alot of pleasure to introduce a new staff writer. She is responsible for a lot of the growth to the list and she has been invited to become a part of the NASCAR Fans staff. So with out further ramblings (Sorry Henry) from me I introduce Lori.
The Points race, Who will it be?
Well its that time of year again race fans. That point where we are anxious to crown our new champion, but feeling a little depressed that the season is coming to a close. (G)
This years points battle is proving to be as exciting any in recent years. With a new face or two here and there in the top 10, it is making for a real close battle in the contention for the highly esteemed Winston Cup. Talk about a conversation piece!! (G) Not to mention that little chunk of pocket change that goes along with it (G)
Mark Martin has been the black knight on the scene this year. It may have been slow at the beginning but he sure has come on strong in the second half of the season. The team has shown to be strong, able to put a winning car behind Mark ever week, as well as pull off fantastic pit stops. It takes much more than a fast car to win the championship these days and it seems that Martin's team is just as close as any to be a serious contender for the title.
At this point in the season Martin is lagging our point leader by just 105 points. His first win didn't come until Sears Point in May. Mark's winning year has consisted of 4 wins, 10 top 5's and 20 top 10's. Not to mention 5 wins in the Busch Grand National Division, in only 12 starts. He was also crowned the invitational IROC champion for 1997. Fuel mileage has cost this team at least one race this year, when he ran out of gas a second time after refueling at the new California Motor Speedway. But Jack Roush finally seemed to get the fuel combination right and Mark won at Dover by a large margin over the rest of the field. That's a pretty phenomenal season if you ask me. Even if he doesnt win the Winston Cup Championship, his stats for this year alone are something that any race car driver could be proud of.
As we stand back and watch the season wind down, with only 5 races to go, its time to think about placing your bets. Who's it gonna be?? Jeff Gordon? With 10 wins its highly possible. Dale Jarrett?? Could be!!! Mark Martin?? With a year like this one, you can't seem to go wrong!!
