The secret (to Mark Martin's fuel mileage win at Dover last Sunday), according to team manager Steve Hmiel, was the carburetor. Roush has developed a carburetor that will save fuel, won't affect horsepower too badly and will not endanger the engine.

"Jack has worked awful hard on this," Hmiel said. "This is an experimental carburetor. It was a new idea Jack had. We didn't use it on the other two cars because we didn't want to take the risk. But for us, it was go or blow. We're in a championship battle." (Bob Zeller, Greensboro News & Record) ========== Kyle Petty, after lapping Winston Cup points leader Jeff Gordon at Dover:

"I will say this, and I don't mean to be ugly, but it feels good to put him a lap down." (Bob Zeller, G. N&R) ========== From MNI and Jack Durbin, here's a schedule for Martinsville's race:

This is David Cornutt speaking of his Silly Season chart:

Since Jayski is no longer updating the NASCAR WC silly season chart on his Web site, I've decided to resume publishing mine. I update this as rumors and info come across, and send it out whenever there are changes (and I have time).

The chart is current as of 9/19/97.
