Since Mike is on vacation, I'll chime in with the latest.....

The Associated Press is reporting that the $50,000 fine incurred by Tony Furr for those illegal carb studs at Daytona has been upheld by a 3-man NASCAR panel. The story doesn't indicate whether this decision will be appealed, but you can bet before either Tony or Cale Yarborough sign off on 50 big ones that they'll plead their case before the National Stock Car Commissioner, Bunkie Knudsen.

Talladega Superspeedway announced this week that they'll add 10,000 temporary seats for the October event. These seats (near turn 3 on the backstretch) have previously only been used for the spring race, but ticket demand is high for the new date in October. Since this is the week we're usually roasting in 'Dega, I know at least one person who's happy with the move (G).

Since the next event is the BY400, here's a little trivia question for you (I'll throw in the answer at the end of this letter----some reward for reading all this, huh?):

Who was the first driver to attempt to qualify for the first Brickyard 400 in 1994?

Jayski is reporting that General Mills is looking at a full-time sponsorship effort in Cup next year....probably with the Wheaties Brand.

Jayski also says that Ford wants Kenny Irwin, Jr. in the RYR #28 car...it's just a matter of getting Texaco to go along.

As Mike pointed out in this morning's news, there are 52 cars on the entry list for the Brickyard next week. Here are a few of the seldom or sometime competitors who've filled out an entry blank:

#12 Jeff Purvis - Opryland Chevy - Owner Dennis Adcock #15 TBA - Ford -Bud Moore #26 Rich Bickle - KFC Team Twister Chevy - Owner Darrell Waltrip #27 Rick Wilson - David Blair Motorsports Ford #61 Tim Steele - HS Die Ford - Owner Harold Steele #92 Ron Barfield - New Holland Ford - Owner Bill Elliott

Jeff Purvis hasn't competed on the Cup tour since Talladega last July....Rich Bickle's last WC event was at Charlotte in October of '95....Tim Steele last raced with the big boys at Talladega in July of 1994.

OK, now the answer to the trivia question....that first attempt to make the inaugural event at the BrickYard was by the venerable H. B. Bailey. HB hasn't competed in a Winston Cup race since the Southern 500 at Darlington in 1993, but he was at Texas Motor Speedway in April, and would have attempted to qualify for the Interstate Batteries 500 had Mother Nature not intervened.
