Roush Fenway Earns 75th NASCAR Sprint Cup Pole

JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 17, 2011) – Roush Fenway Racing’s Matt Kenseth covered the 1.5-mile tri-oval of Chicagoland Speedway in 29.469 seconds (183.243 mph) to claim the first pole in the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup. Roush Fenway teammate and fellow Chase competitor Carl Edwards will start fifth in the race. Greg Biffle qualified seventh and David Ragan will start 15th.

“It reminds me a little bit of Vegas,” said Kenseth. “So yesterday we worked on race trim the first practice and then only made one qualifying run the second practice and it drove as good as I could expect it to drive. I told them to just leave it…I was thrilled with our car for one lap and being in qualifying trim and race trim I think we have a little bit of work to do.”

“My cars have just been fast and driving really good,” added Kenseth. “I think (crew chief) Jimmy (Fennig) works really hard on it (qualifying) too and it has always been really important to Jimmy. Back in the day when it was easier to pass it probably wasn’t as important to us as it is today. Maybe I am a little better at it but the main thing is the cars have been really fast.”

The pole is Roush Fenway’s first at Chicagoland Speedway in Sprint Cup action and its seventh Sprint Cup pole in 2011. It is Kenseth’s second NSCS pole of 2011, marking the first time since 2005 the former series champion has captured multiple Cup poles in a season.
