Nadeau's car smashed into the wall, driver's side first, and he had to be cut from the car by safety workers. After being extricated from the vehicle, emergency personnel placed a neck brace on Nadeau.

Nadeau was airlifted from Richmond International Raceway to the University of Virginia Medical Center. NASCAR has confirmed that the track doctors stated there is a possibility that Nadeau has suffered "serious injuries".

The 32-year-old Nadeau had set the 7th fastest time during the session before he went low in the first turn. He hit the wall hard and no one else was involved.

Busch series driver Jason Keller drove Nadeau's No. 01 MB2 Pontiac during Friday's final practice. Keller will drive for Nadeau in the Saturday night's Winston Cup event.

Update: 9:05pm Jerry Nadeau is listed in critical condition, has breathing assistance. Evaluations will continue.
