Burton has kickin' paint scheme
MOTEGI, Japan (Nov. 21, 1998) Sometimes a paint scheme can be used to send a message. For years, Dale Earnhardt has piloted a black Chevrolet, part of his image as 'the Intimidator'. Jeff Burton has unveiled a paint scheme here in Japan that he hopes will one-up the Intimidator.
Universal Studios Consumer Products Group and Roush Racing announced a special Bruce Lee paint scheme to commemorate Burton's inaugural NASCAR race in Twin Ring Motegi. The No. 99 will feature a picture of Lee in one of his karate poses on the hood, plus dragons on the wheel wells.
"Because I'm a fan of Bruce Lee's films, I'm excited about the opportunity to drive this commemorative car in the special exhibition race in Japan," said Burton. "I think the car, like the race, will appeal to fans in both the United States and Japan."
Bruce Lee created a legacy of excellence in martial arts filmmaking that is unmatched to this day. Born in San Francisco and raised in Hong Kong, Lee "Xiao-long" or "Little Dragon" successfully bridged the gap between East and West, making him a cultural icon the world over. Lee completed only four films before his untimely death 25 years ago, yet established himself as a permanent fixture in the galaxy of international stars.
"The combination of Bruce Lee, Jeff's inaugural race in Japan and the 50th Anniversary of NASCAR is a great tie-in for Universal Studios, the Lee family and Roush Racing," said Elliot Lederman, Vice President of Licensing for Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. "We are proud to have this opportunity to work with one of NASCAR's top drivers and leading teams. The products featuring the historic teaming of Jeff Burton with martial arts legend Bruce Lee are certain to become hot collectibles."
A complete line of Burton/Lee licensed merchandise will be produced by Dimension 4 and Racing Champions. The line will include a range of apparel, souvenirs, die-cast replica collectibles and other memorabilia that will be available through distribution channels as well as track-side at NASCAR events.
Universal's agreement with Roush Racing marks the sixth special paint scheme in the NASCAR Winston Cup series. Universal has promoted its feature films, television properties and theme park attractions including Jurassic Park: The Ride which was featured on Jeff Gordon's car in the 1997 Winston all-star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
