CENTER LINE, Mich. - Tony Stewart Motorsports is gunning for another USAC "hat trick" this year and has teamed with Mopar Parts to help make it happen.
In 1995, Stewart became the first driver ever to win three USAC divisions (Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget) in the same year. The current NASCAR Winston Cup champion intends to repeat that as an open-wheel car owner in 2003.
"Mopar is very excited to partner with Tony to help power his goal of capturing three USAC racing division titles as an owner," said Kevin Miller, Senior Manager - Mopar Brand Excitement. "We pride ourselves on providing the right tools and programs to help our dealers improve their competitive edge, so it is only natural to support our race teams in this same fashion."
An impressive team will be handling the USAC driving duties for Stewart, including Jay Drake in the Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget series, and J.J. Yeley in the Sprint series. Danny Lasoski will once again drive for Stewart in the World of Outlaws with Mopar power.
Drake, of Val Verde, Calif., won Western Midget Car rookie-of-the-year honors in 1993, and has since competed in all three USAC premier series. His 19 USAC feature wins in the 2000 season tied a record held by A.J. Foyt.
Yeley, of Phoenix, Ariz., is a veteran of West Coast Sprint and Midget racing. He was the USAC 2001 "Super License" champion by winning all three national series titles. In 2002 he captured the USAC Silver Crown Championship.
Lasoski, of Dover, Mo., was the 2001 WoO Series champion. In 2002, he finished the year with 13 wins and runner-up status in the final point standings.
Stewart will drive in selected races, including defending his Mopar-powered 2002 title in this week's Chili Bowl event in Tulsa, Okla. Stewart has established himself as one of the most versatile drivers of the modern era by capturing driver championships in the USAC Silver Crown, Midget and Sprint series, the IRL, and NASCAR Winston Cup.
Keith Kunz and George Snider will partner in the Tony Stewart Motorsports venture, helping prepare the cars driven by Drake and Yeley.
Mopar Parts is based in Center Line, Mich., and is the exclusive original equipment supplier of parts for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles.
