Congratulations to John Andretti and the Cale Yarborough Motorsports team on their victory this afternoon in the Pepsi 400, the first for Yarborough Motorsports since 1985, and the first ever in Winston Cup for John Andretti.

Next year's Pepsi 400 is set for July 4, 1998, under the lights. Should be awesome fireworks after the race, eh? Thanks, Bill, and others for the info.

At the post race press conference after the inaugural California 500, Jeff Gordon is dutifully answering all the questions about how he conserved enough fuel to win: drafting, easing off the gas earlier into corners... Then, a guy in the back of the room stands up and says, "What role did the Lord Jesus Christ play in your victory?" Gordon, a regular at the paddock church services, replies, "Well, He gives us the ability to make the calls and He gives us the teamwork we need..." Pause. "But He didn't give us the extra gas."

When Bristol opened 4000 new seats recently the track received more than 80,000 applications, representing 320,000 ticket requests for the upcoming Goody's Headache Powder 500.

At California Speedway, the competitors' motorcoaches were parked across from the garage area, and that's where Jimmy Spencer's father, Ed, decided to take refuge from the heat during the race weekend. The elder Spencer walked into the motorcoach he thought belonged to his son, removed some strawberries from the refrigerator and ate them, took off his shoes, and reclined. Like Spencer, Kenny Wallace decided to escape the heat in his motorcoach and grab some lunch. When Wallace jumped up into his coach, he found Spencer relaxing on his couch. "Kenny, what are you doing in here?" Spencer jumped up and asked. "This is my coach. Jimmy's is next door," Wallace replied. The embarassed Spencer put on his shoes, left, and went to his son's coach. "We're a happy family," Wallace said. "I thought it was funny. The thing that embarassed him the most is that he ate our strawberries. It was funny, we're not going to let him live that down for a long time."

Penda Corp. will be Ken Schrader's exclusive sponsor in three Craftsman Truck Series races this year; 7/31 at Indy, 9/4 at Richmond, and 11/9 at Las Vegas.

Autoweek reports the theft of 6 turtles from a carnival at a nursing home in Colorado. One of the annual events is a turtle race where residents bet on the competitors. SCCA chief Dan Greenwood, who was quoted a few weeks back as saying land turtles with the NASCAR logo would draw a crowd of 50,000, after hearing about the theft, quipped, "Has it started??"
