Marlin Pilots Coors Light Dodge to Ninth Top-15 Finish of the Season at Michigan
BROOKLYN, Mich., (August 22, 2004) --- Sterling Marlin and the Coors Light crew continued their consistent run at Michigan International Speedway as Marlin scored 15th place honors in the GFS Marketplace 400.
After qualifying was canceled on Friday due to inclement weather for the second week in a row, the field was lined up by points with Marlin occupying the 20th starting spot. The Silver Bullet began quickly making its way through the field and by lap five was occupying the 11th position.
On lap 31 the Coors Light crew made a quick pit stop for four tires and fuel while a slight air pressure adjustment was made. Marlin exited pit road in 13th. Marlin continued to run in the top 15, but when the caution came out for the sixth time on lap 71 he reported that the current set of tires was not as good and the car had gotten tight.
Marlin cruised down pit road on lap 72 and the Coors Light crew pulled out a rubber and made a wedge adjustment. Several teams took only two tires during the stop while the Coors Light Dodge was fitted for four fresh tires. When racing resumed on lap 75 Marlin's Dodge was in the 26th position.
The Coors Light crew continued to make slight adjustments and by lap 119 the Silver Bullet broke into the top-10. When the ninth and final caution of the day came out on lap 130, the Coors Light Dodge was sitting ninth.
The Coors Light Dodge slipped back after the restart on lap 136, but Marlin was able to hold on for his ninth top-15 finish of the season when he took the checkered flag in the 15th position.
"We never could get the car quite balanced," Marlin said. "We made several slight changes throughout the race but it never got just right. We had some great runs out there and we had a good finish."
Marlin's continues to be 20th in the NEXTEL Cup championship points, 396 points out of the top 10. Ganassi teammates Jamie McMurray and Casey Mears finished fourth and 20th respectively.
The Coors Light team returns to Bristol Motor Speedway next weekend. The race will be broadcast live on TNT and PRN radio on Saturday night August 28th.
