Smith, Furniture Row Produce Strong Performance in Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich (Aug. 15, 2010) -- Regan Smith flirted with a top-10 finish, but a brush with the concrete wall late in the race dropped him to a 21st-place result in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup event at Michigan International Speedway. It was the 10th time this season that Smith has finished 21st or better.

Smith, who sent out a tweet prior to the race saying that he had a strong Furniture Row Chevrolet, was right on with his statement. He was positioned in the top-10 and as high as fourth as the 400-mile race was winding down.

"When we were running in the top-10 it was a combination of sound pit strategy and a fast Furniture Row Chevrolet," said Smith. "It was getting a little dicey out there and I scraped the wall which caused enough damage to affect the car's aerodynamic package. These cars are very sensitive and it doesn't take much to throw the aero off. But we managed to hang on and finish the race. We had a solid weekend of racing and it was a big step for our program."

A key moment for the Furniture Row team came when crew chief Pete Rondeau called for fuel only during a pit stop on Lap 156 of 200. The pit-road elapsed time saved by not taking fresh tires resulted in Smith vaulting from 17th to 10th in track position.

"Pete made a good call and it sure made it exciting for us," said Smith. "We gave it everything we had today and almost came away with the top-10 finish."

The Carfax 400 race winner was Kevin Harvick. Rounding out the top-five in order were: Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth.

The next Sprint Cup race is Saturday night (Aug. 21) at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
