Labonte to Start TaxSlayer.com Chevy from 20th Row at MIS
Brooklyn, Mich., (Aug. 13, 2010) - Bobby Labonte will start the No. 71 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet Impala SS from the 20th row for Sunday's running of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series CarFax 400 to be run at Michigan International Speedway (MIS).
Labonte and the TRG Motorsports crew worked through practice to get the red No. 71 set for qualifying. Crew chief Dan Stillman and Labonte made several changes for qualifying that improved the Taxslayer.com Chevy's overall speed resulting in a 40th place effort. With the threat of rain looming for final practice tomorrow, the team is reviewing their notes and may have to make adjustments for the race without the luxury of Happy Hour practice on Saturday.
"We were way too loose at the start of practice," Labonte said. "We got it progressively better throughout the session. We made a lot of changes and went out and did one qualifying run and it was too tight. We made one adjustment that we hadn't played with a whole lot this season, so we didn't know how critical it was, but we do now."
In qualifying Labonte reported a tight race car.
"In qualifying we were too tight. We made the changes and one big change we made didn't help us out too much. We reviewed the run on TV and we noticed some smoke coming from the left rear, maybe a tire rub. We will have to work that out in practice tomorrow, if there is one."
Chance of rain in the forecast for Saturday threatens a washout of final practice.
"If the rain comes we have to make our best guess at the set-up, like everyone else does. Unfortunately our notebook isn't very thick. We didn't race here the last time. We just have to go back and review our notes from practice and make sure we put the best set-up on the car for the start of the race and leave room for some adjustability. Rain will also wash the rubber off of the track, but it will rubber up quick on Sunday."
Team principal, Kevin Buckler, is looking for a solid result from the team on Sunday.
"I think we will be battling the elements this weekend," Buckler said. "We had a hot, muggy day and the possibility of rain tomorrow will have the team making an educated guess on the set-up for Sunday. Bobby and the crew are working well together, we made a change for qualifying that didn't quite work out, but hopefully we can work on it in practice tomorrow. We are looking forward to giving the TaxSlayer.com folks a strong run on Sunday."
