"I was just hoping we could back up our lap from the practice this morning. Even though the track is a bit warmer now, the team usually makes adjustments to go for a little bit more speed. We ran an .84 in practice with a .92 now, so we slowed up. Hopefully, the temperatures will rise for everybody else as well. It was a great effort today. We just need a decent starting spot because we know how important it is to run out front here because of the speeds you carry. This place is fun to race."
HOW CONFIDENT IS THIS TEAM? "We're building great cars and we go into each race with an objective to gain as many points as we can. That's the only strategy you can have. With us being just past halfway in the race for the Cup, we've got to make sure we're in the top 10 and right now that's where we're at."
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THIS TRACK? "Each driver looks forward to this place and California Speedway. This circuit has a nice balance of do you go for aero or do you go for the chassis handling? Those two are very important and this place challenges both."
IT'S EASY TO PASS ON, RIGHT? "It is easy to pass on if your car is handling well, but the biggest thing is if you're handling well and running out front, you're just gonna be able to pull away."
DOES JACK PUT ANYMORE PRESSURE ON YOU TO RUN WELL IN HIS BACKYARD? "We know we should. Jack doesn't give us any added pressure, it's just great that we've got so many employees from Roush Racing here in the Livonia area as well as Ford Motor Company being based here. It's a good challenge to come and do well."
WHAT'S THE SECRET TO SUCCESS HERE? "Having that setup that will continuously adapt to the race track. When we start off the race at 1:30 in the afternoon it's different than at 4:30 when we finish."
JEFF BURTON - No. 99 Roush Racing Taurus (Qualified 17th)
"This is a big wide race track that you can run a lot of different grooves and put your car in a lot of different positions. To me, that's a lot of fun. I enjoy looking for different places to run and that's why so many people like Michigan because it gives you a lot of options."
WHAT'S THE SECRET HERE? "Man, go through the corners. If you can go fast through the corners, you can have a good day."
HOW WAS YOUR QUALIFYING? "It was OK. We officially ran the same speed we ran this morning. We probably needed to pick up a little more than that, but the car drives great. I like the way it drives. We just needed to be a little bit better to turn a real fast time, but we pretty much backed up what we ran in practice. We're not the best qualifying team in the world. We certainly need to work on it, but that's not gonna be terrible. That's not gonna be great, but that will get us in the show and we'll be able to race. I feel good about it."
DOES JACK PUT MORE PRESSURE ON YOU HERE AT MICHIGAN? "Every race is a big race. There are no small races. Every race is a big race. Every race you go out and try to do the very best you can and this is no different than any other."
HOW DOES IT DRIVE? "It drives really nice. I'd like it to turn just a little bit better, but that's the Viagra car from last week. I'm real happy and proud that we work so well together and Mark and all these guys let us borrow their car. It really drives well and I look forward to getting it in race trim."
ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 22nd)
"We just missed it a little bit. We were a little tighter than we were this morning, it's just tough. The guys have been doing good and I know we've got a good race car but we just missed it a little bit for qualifying. That's gonna put us back in the field, but, hopefully, we'll be good come Sunday."
MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (Qualified 15th)
"That will probably wind up, we're guessing, around 15th which will make us happy. As long as we don't drop further than 15th or 16th - something like that. I would have liked to have done a little bit better. The sun was really bright when we went and that might have been worth a few one-hundredths, but we weren't a top five car. If we would have hit everything just right, we could have made the top 10 or been around 10th. This is a good race car. This is the car I won Dover with and it's the car I wanted to bring here. These guys are charged up and, hopefully, we'll have a good day. I haven't run good here in about two years, but I think this car will do it."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Keep It Genuine/Motorcraft Taurus (Qualified 25th)
"This is kind of an experiment. We didn't know what we had when we got here, it's something a little different. I think it's a little bit better than we've been running. It gets frustrating because you want to gain it all. We've been way off and you want to get it all at one time, but it's gonna be a little bit at a time. There are some gains - not to the degree that I'd love to see - but it's better than going the other way. That's one of the first times we didn't slow up qualifying and actually gotten better. The track is giving up grip as it gets hotter. A lot of cars in general have slowed down from what they practiced and we picked up a little bit."
MATT KENSETH - No. 17 DEWALT Tools Taurus (Qualified 18th)
"I'm satisfied with that. We've got our Carhartt car here this weekend and that's a pretty good lap for us. We unloaded off the truck fairly decent and during practice we kind of chased a problem the whole time and just kind of guessed at the setup for qualifying. We were just a little too loose, which was good because we were pushing for most of the practice. Anytime we're in the top 20 that's pretty good for us."
