Michigan International Speedway -- Saturday, August 18, 2001 -- Happy Hour Red Flag

Michael Waltrip, NAPA Chevrolet walked away from a fiery crash on the first few laps of final practice prior to Sunday's Pepsi 400.

Waltrip hit the wall hard driver's left in turn four and an oil fire developed that engulfed the driver side of the car. Waltrip had to exit on the right side and to do so, had to kick out the Plexiglas window. "I looked at that wall and knew I had to exit on the right side. Started to un belt and move out when I remembered I had to unhook the Hans device. I would not have had to do that if I could have exit on the left side. Could see the fire and was glad to have gotten out", said Waltrip from the garage interview. A unknown medic helped pull Waltrip from the car.

Waltrip is uninjured and getting ready to return to the track in the back-up car. Waltrip qualified yesterday in seventh position. "Now is the time to regroup and think positive for the race tomorrow", said Waltrip.
