MOORESVILLE, NC - May 4, 1999 - Ricky Rudd, owner and driver of the Tide Ford Taurus, announced today that he has reached an agreement with Michael McSwain to become the crew chief for Rudd Performance Motorsports. "We've had a very difficult season so far and have been making a number of changes to get our Tide/Whirlpool Fords back among the best teams. I've been following Mike's career for a long time and I've been really impressed with the results he's produced, especially this year," Rudd said. The Tide Team has been without a crew chief since Rudd and Bill Ingle parted after the Primestar 500 at Atlanta. Since that time the team has used a "crew chief by committee" approach led by Dan Stillman, Dave Anthony, Hoyt Overbaugh, and Doug McGill. "We've improved a lot over the last several weeks even though our results don't show it," Rudd continued. "Dan and the crew have done a great job and I wanted to make sure I hired the right man to fit in with our group. I didn't want to upset the team chemistry we've started to develop and I think Mike will fit right in with our team." McSwain, who hails from Lattimore, North Carolina, moves to RPM from Yarborough-Burdette Motorsports where he worked with driver Rick Mast. "I'm really excited to join Ricky and the Tide Team. I don't know anyone who wouldn't be excited about the opportunity to work with a driver of his caliber," McSwain said. "For the short time I've been here I can see that all the pieces are here to build a winning team. It's hard to believe that this team hasn't already been successful this year. There's a lot of talent in this shop, and I'm impressed with the crew that's here. We just need to put all the pieces together." McSwain will begin his duties immediately.
