Martinsville Speedway Receives School-Work Partnership Award

Martinsville, VA---Martinsville Speedway has been presented with a Partner-in-Excellence Award by the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce for its school-work partnership with Martinsville High School. It was the first year of the partnership between the high school and speedway and the two had numerous projects including students working at the track on race weekend, the school band playing the National Anthem at races, sponsoring the school play, internet classes taught by speedway Public Relations Director Steve Sheppard, and Dale Earnhardt and Bobby Hamilton speaking to assemblies at the school. "It has been an outstanding partnership working with the school administration and the students," Sheppard said. "We have the opportunity to give students exposure to a national audience with the things they do at the track, plus it’s a great learning experience for them to meet some of the people who are involved in racing." "One of the great things about the partnership is that both the speedway and the school has benefited from the partnership," said Sheppard. "Students have had the opportunity to be exposed to the media by working in the press box and the school’s wrestling team made $8,000 on April’s race weekend working cleanup at the track to pay for a wrestling tournament trip to Orlando, Florida." Dr. Tom Fitzgibbons said the partnership was a great success for the school. "In 10 years of administration, I have never participated in a partnership that has been as successful as the one between Martinsville High School and the speedway. All 751 students have been involved in at least one aspect of the partnership from hearing speakers, working on web design, or playing the national anthem at the race track. The entire student body was active in the partnership," Fitzgibbons said. Patrick Warren a junior at Martinsville High School works in the press box on race weekend and was one of about 30 students who have taken the web development class from Sheppard. Warren said the business partnership has been "great." "Martinsville Speedway has provided numerous opportunities to Martinsville High School students to help further our education. From actual business experience, to technological training and support. The speedway has provided it all for us. We cannot express our appreciation deeply enough," he said. The Partnerships-in-Excellence Award is given each year by the chamber for school-work partnerships that demonstrate excellence in education and the community working together. The awards are given in small, medium and large business categories and Drake Extrusion and Tultex Corp. also received awards. Martinsville Speedway’s next race is the Taco Bell 300 NASCAR Late Model Stock Car race on Sunday, September 26. The NAPA AutoCare 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race is Sunday, October 3 and the Goody’s Body Pain 200 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series race is Saturday, October 2. Tickets are available for all events by calling 540 956-3151.
