Ward Burton To Make NEXTEL Cup Return At Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, VA. (October 15, 2006) -- Jeff Burton has dominated racing headlines the past few weeks as he has held tightly to his lead in the Chase to the NEXTEL Cup.

But he may be forced to share the spotlight this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. His older brother Ward will return to the NEXTEL Cup Series for the SUBWAY 500, attempting to make his first series start in almost two years.

He will be driving the No. 4 Lucas Oil Chevrolet for Morgan McClure Racing out of Abingdon.

"He's expressed a lot of interest in driving," said Chris Carrier, crew chief for the Morgan-McClure team. "He's a Virginia driver and we're a Virginia team. That makes for a great combination at Martinsville."

Burton, who lives in South Boston, has a Daytona 500 victory and two top-10 NEXTEL Cup points finishes to his credit in an 11-year NEXTEL Cup career. Most of those years were spent at Bill Davis Racing.

One of Burton's seven NEXTEL Cup poles came at Martinsville (1997) as did one of his four Busch Series victories (1993).

Burton parted ways with Davis after the fall Martinsville race in 2003 and joined Haas-CNC Racing, where he competed in the No. 0 but was plagued by six mechanical failures in 34 races during the 2004 season.

Burton and the team hope to test at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford this week to help prepare for the SUBWAY 500.

Tickets remain for both the SUBWAY 500 on Sunday, October 22, and the Kroger 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, on Saturday, October 21, and can be purchased by calling 1.877.RACE.TIX. SUBWAY 500 tickets may also be purchased online at www.racetickets.com. For race information, please visit www.martinsvillespeedway.com.

Ticket prices for the SUBWAY 500 range from $42 to $77. Tickets for the Kroger 200 are $35 in advance and $40 the day of the event. Kroger 200 tickets for children ages 6 to 12 are $5.
