Martinsville, VA---Martinsville Speedway and NASCAR have set the 2001 Winston Cup race dates for the historic track. The speedway will host NASCAR Winston Cup races on Sunday, April 8 and Sunday, October 14. It will be the 53rd year the Winston Cup Series has raced at Martinsville. The Strictly Stock Series, the forerunner to Winston Cup, ran at the track during the series' inaugural season in 1949. Both of Martinsville Speedway's Winston Cup races in 2001 will be 46th annual 500-lap events at the track. "We are very proud of our history going into our 55th season of operation in 2001," said speedway President Clay Campbell. "The NASCAR Winston Cup Series has been a part of Martinsville Speedway from the start and we are the only track that has raced the series since the beginning." Red Byron won the first Strictly Stock race, a 200-lap event, at Martinsville on September 25, 1949. The series name changed to Grand National in 1950 and Martinsville continued to run 200-lap Grand National races until 1956 when the track began running 500-lap Grand National races. The series' name was changed to the Winston Cup Series in 1971 with the involvement of the Winston sponsorship. Tickets for Martinsville's Winston Cup race on Sunday, April 8, 2001 go on sale August 9 and tickets for the Winston Cup race on Sunday, October 14, 2001 go on sale in March 2001. Martinsville's next racing action, this year, is the Taco Bell 300, the richest race for NASCAR's Late Model Stock cars with $25,000 to win, on Sunday, September 24. The Goody's Body Pain 200 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour race is Saturday, September 30 and the 45th annual NAPA AutoCare 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race is on Sunday, October 1. Tickets for the Taco Bell 300 and Goody's Body Pain 200 are unreserved. There still are excellent reserved seats available for the NAPA AutoCare 500 in the towers and concrete bleacher sections from $40-$70.
