Smith Gets Clipped, Spoiling a Potentially Strong Run

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 24, 2010) -- Regan Smith was biding his time at Martinsville Speedway, knowing that he had a car capable of equaling or bettering his two finishes the past two weeks of 12th and 13th.

But on Lap 185 of 500 and running in the low 20s, Smith was the victim of two cars banging each other for position. The end result was a frustrating 31st-place finish in Sunday's TUMS Fast Relief 500 Sprint Cup race.

To avoid the bumping between Scott Speed and Sam Hornish Jr., Smith drove his No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet to the high side. As he was about to clear both cars, Speed's No. 82 machine fishtailed and clipped Smith's car. The incident resulted in Smith crashing into the concrete barrier with major car damage.

After lengthy repairs to the crippled No. 78 car, Smith returned to action but finished 58 laps down.

"We had a good weekend going until that hit," said Smith, who qualified 13th. "It looked like the No. 82 (Speed) and No. 77 (Hornish) were about to wreck each other, so I went on the outside to avoid them. I almost made it, but the No. 82 got a piece of our car and put me in the fence. It was too bad for everyone at Furniture Row because we had a nice streak going."

Smith added, "We didn't start off the race as we had hoped, but we were making the right adjustments and the car was definitely improving."

The next Sprint Cup race is Sunday, Oct. 31 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
