Ambrose Starts on Front Row at Martinsville in TUMS Fast Relief 500

MARTINSVILLE, Va.(October 22, 2010) - - Marcos Ambrose snatched the outside pole position for the TUMS Fast Relief 500 after turning a lap of 19.521 seconds in his No. 47 Dollar General Country Million Sweepstakes Toyota Camry at Martinsville Speedway Friday afternoon.

Denny Hamlin, a three-time winner at the half-mile oval, barely edged the Australian driver for the top starting spot with a lap time of 19.518 seconds.

Ambrose's second-place starting position for the 500-lap event is his career-best NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying effort with JTG Daugherty Racing.

"I'm looking forward to starting on the front row - - I just wish that I was starting on the inside," Ambrose said. "This place is really tricky and tough to get around. Your car has to be really loose to get around these corners.

"We've had a great short track program all year and we've been looking forward to coming here to Martinsville," Ambrose continued. "It's been a good day for us. We started off pretty loose and we had a little spin there early in practice. We got lucky and didn't hit anything. Then we switched over to qualifying trim and were in the top 15. We turned a really good lap in qualifying. I didn't think it was going to be as good as the front row, but we'll take it. We're happy."

In three attempts, Ambrose and JTG Daugherty Racing's best NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finish at Martinsville is 11th place that occurred in March.

"We've done well here before, we finished fifth at Richmond (International Raceway) and we have always done well at Bristol (Motor Speedway)," Ambrose said. "That shows the strength in our short track program. I'm really focused on our deal this weekend and on what I can control. I'm pretty excited about our changes on Sunday.
