JIMMY SPENCER (No. 7 Sirius Satellite Radio Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified Sixth
"The car we wrecked this morning was our Richmond car and New Hampshire car. This Dodge is a sister to it, but I'm not sure it's any better. We've got good cars. I just made a mistake this morning. I was in a bunch of cars and made a mistake. It was one of them deals where I misjudged it and ended up in the wall. We got about five laps on the backup car. I had a lot of confidence in the car. We made a few changes to it to get it to grip better, and it worked. That's just a sign the guys have confidence in me, and I've got confidence in them. I hope we can get a sponsor and keep this thing going next year. I like Martinsville. We had a really good car here in the spring. We were leading the race and there was a mistake in the pits. We had only two fuel cans. NASCAR has since changed that. We had one of them quick gas and go deals, and the gas can got stuck. It wasn't ours. We had to borrow it. I've run good here, but I've never won here.
"I thought we could have qualified in the top 15 with this backup, but to come out of here sixth is awesome. I'm really looking forward to the race."
RUSTY WALLACE (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified Seventh
"It handled good in practice, but we were just not good. I knew I had to get in the corner deeper and get it turning in the center. We pumped the air pressure up in the tires to get it going quicker for a lap or two. All that worked pretty good. I look back and if I had known it was going to be that good in the center of the corner I would have driven in a little deeper still. My quickest lap in practice was 25th or 30th fastest. Practice doesn't really mean much, but I knew we had some work to do. It gives you a lot of confidence that you've always run good here, but I couldn't get the car to do what I wanted it to do in practice. I had to go back to what I knew would work. I think it'll be real good in the race. We make some changes for practice tomorrow and get it ready to race. Midway through the second practice, we'll probably know where we're at."
STERLING MARLIN (No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified Ninth
"I usually slow down here in qualifying. We picked up a tenth. The guys worked hard. We were tight early, and then we got it too loose. We got it back where it needed to be for qualifying. I either qualify good or bad here, either in the top 10 or 30th on back. I think we're going to be pretty good in the race. This is the same car we had here in the spring, and it was pretty good then. The track hasn't got any grip. We made some changes, and I think we go it better."
BILL ELLIOTT (No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified 28th
It's so close here. My car wasn't too bad on new tires, and that's probably the way we should have gone. We'll probably end up back in the pack. It's pretty hard to pass here, so I guess we'll try to make up some spots on pit road."
RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified Eighth
"It was all right. It wasn't what we wanted. It was still a good lap. We were actually a little bit quicker in practice. I got a little loose off turn four. I don't think the track changed much from practice. This is no different from any other racetrack. You've got to get through all of them. You might bend your fender up a little more here, but that's about it. You have more cautions here, but you've got 500 laps, too. We haven't been good here. We tested here, and hopefully we learned some things that will make us good in race trim."
JAMIE McMURRAY (No. 42 Havoline Dodge Intrepid) - Top Rookie, Qualified 17th
"The car was probably a little better than what I ran. The last time here I overdrove it in qualifying, and I probably underdrove it today. We were 15th in practice, and that's about where we'll end up in qualifying. We put new tires on and that's about all we did different from practice."
JEREMY MAYFIELD (No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified 30th
"There was just no grip. We can't seem to find it for some reason. We're sliding around. We've been good and bad here in the past. I've qualified well and run well, and I've been on the other end, too. We'll be starting in the back, but hopefully it'll work out for us."
JEFF GREEN (No. 43 Cheerios Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified 10th
"I usually slow down in qualifying, but the guys gave me a great race car. It was hard to get hold of the track, but they believe in me, and I think we can go places with that. The track got a little more grip after practice, and that's what you want. We got the job done with this Dodge today. We should have a good starting spot for the race."
CASEY MEARS (No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified 35th
"We never made a qualifying run in practice. We messed around with a bunch of stuff and never got in a qualifying run. We ran out of time, so I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know until we got out there."
KYLE PETTY (No. 45 Georgia Pacific Dodge Intrepid) - Qualified 32nd
"We picked up a lot on the second lap, but that's because I almost wrecked on the first lap. We picked up a tick from practice. Jeff has been doing a good job for us since he came over here. He's really helped the 43 team get on track."
