GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 Jackson Hewitt/National Guard/Subway Taurus (Qualified 8th)
"I thought it was a great lap for me and the National Guard/Jackson Hewitt car. These guys working on it did a great job because I'm not the best driver at Martinsville, but I've got a great race car. Probably if there would have been a little better driver, it might have been on the front row right now. But I'm extremely happy with second. Hopefully, that will hold up and get us a top 10 or maybe a top 15 starting spot so I'm real excited about it."
HAS THE TRACK CHANGED MUCH FROM THE FALL? "It doesn't seem like it so far. I've just done qualifying runs, so I haven't made but probably 15 laps total since I've been here - just making two laps at a time to get qualifying down. We won't really know that until tomorrow when we put the car in race trim and make 20-30 lap runs. But it appears that it's in the same shape as it was then - pretty decent."
HOW GOOD OF A CAR DO YOU FEEL YOU'LL HAVE FOR SUNDAY? "I feel like I'm gonna have a good car right now. For qualifying that was a pretty fast lap for us and wasn't that bad. I don't know how it's gonna hold up with the weather. If it rains a little bit here and they blow the track it might get faster. Being a greener race track might give it more grip, I don't know. But that should be a good starting spot and I have a good car."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Motorcraft Genuine Parts Taurus (Qualified 13th)
"I've been coming here a lot of years, but I felt the pressure today. I tried not to let it bother me, but it was still there. It was probably a little bit faster race car than I was able to show. I didn't want to make some stupid mistake and spin out, which is real easy to do here. I just wanted to get a good, solid lap in. The guys - Fatback McSwain - and all the guys on the Motorcraft team have put a heckuva good race car under me this week. We tested over 500 laps a couple of weeks ago, so I feel real good about our race setup."
DID YOU GIVE UP MUCH IN TERMS OF QUALIFYING VERSUS RACE SETUP? "We came here and ran 500 laps of practice a couple of weeks ago on race setup. We never did any qualifying runs, so this is pretty much the way we're gonna race. There wasn't anything special under it that was different. Even if it would have been an impound race, we pretty much came with the race setup. On a short track you've got to handle and we put our best handling setup under it which happened to be our fastest as well."
SO YOU'RE NOT WORRIED ABOUT SUNDAY? "Some of that might apply on an intermediate track like a Texas or a Vegas or something like that where you can sacrifice your race setup. Here at Martinsville, especially with it not being an impound race, but either way you've got to go through the corners here and that's what they did. They put their best handling setup for me here. I probably was extra conservative and left a little speed on the table. I don't know if it would have been a pole-sitting car, but it was probably an honest one-tenth of a second faster probably left in the car. I just didn't want to do something stupid and spin out and not have a security net there."
ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 25th)
"We're used to qualifying good everywhere we go. Me as a driver, I need to probably get better here at Martinsville qualifying. I probably need to come here and test some for that. It's not gonna be where we want, but we think our car is gonna be decent in race trim. We've just got to get some good calls and get some good pit strategy and get some good luck and just get out of here with a top 10 or a top 15 finish. I think that's our goal here this weekend."
YOU SAID LAST WEEK YOU'VE PUT IN A LOT OF PREP WORK FOR THIS PLACE, BUT IT WAS MORE RACE RUN TYPE STUFF? "Yeah, I mean we did a lot of preparation just for race runs and getting ourselves in that position. That's when it's gonna count. We'd love to want to come here and qualify in the top 10. That would be great, but we've made improvements here from last fall in qualifying so we'll just see what we've got. We'll just have to come from the back, make some good calls and get some good luck and go from there."
KURT BUSCH - No. 97 Crown Royal Taurus (Qualified 9th)
"We've struggled at impound races because I can't find that setup, but this is a regular weekend and so therefore I think we've got an OK setup for both qualifying and race. This should get us in the top 10 to start and that's where we were last time we had a regular non-impound race. We're still struggling on the impound stuff, but this is a great start for us and then we'll go on to race mode tomorrow. It just feels like a regular weekend to me."
HERMIE SADLER - No. 66 Peak Fitness Taurus (Qualified 38th)
"Today, the shoe was kind of on the other foot. In the other races we've really had to step up big in qualifying to get in and here I just kind of had to back up what I did in practice. I saw a lot of the guys getting loose and the car was better than what I drove it today. I was probably a little bit too conservative to get a real, real fast lap, but I wanted to get a good, solid safe lap and get in the show and then be here on Sunday. It's 500 laps on Sunday and we need a good, solid finish."
