BRETT BODINE --11-- Paychex Taurus (Finished 42nd) -- "We had good luck when we caught that yellow and kept ourselves on the lead lap -- we were fading pretty bad. We needed a caution and got it, but from what they tell me I got caught up in somebody's payback. If you're gonna pay somebody back you don't jeopardize your other competitors. I mean, there is plenty of racing left this year to get even, if that's what the driver of the 28 wanted to do." WHAT DID YOU SEE? "I couldn't believe what I saw. The 28 just turned and put me in the wall and ran in the back of the 20 all at the same time. When he put me in the wall it broke my steering and I couldn't turn the car. I went on up there and hit the wall again and hit the 20 car. I just couldn't believe that he just hung a right (turn) right in the middle of the straightaway."
RICH BICKLE --9-- Cartoon Network Taurus (Finished 37th) -- "Our car wasn't all that good, it was really loose there for a while, but all I've got to say is one thing -- when there's a wreck and people are sideways, people need to learn how to put the brake pedal on instead of standing on the gas pedal and shoving themselves through. I mean, that's ridiculous. But, that's kind of the way our day was in the Cartoon Network car. It's just some guys, I'm telling you...they keep getting rides though. It surprises me."
JIMMY SPENCER --23-- Team Winston Taurus (Finished 17th) -- "It was a good car, but the motor missed all day...all the way down the straightaway. It just really hurt us. I don't know what was wrong with it, but it just killed us."
KENNY IRWIN --28-- Texaco Havoline Taurus (Finished 39th) -- "I just drove him like he drove me. It's pretty evident, you just watch the TV I think, on what exactly happened and I just treated him exactly like he treated me." TONY SAID THE FIRST TIME WAS AN ACCIDENT. "OK then what happened the second time? I mean, then we'll call turn one and two and accident too. I just drove him exactly the way he drove me." DID YOU HEAR HIS SPOTTER APOLOGIZE TO YOU AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT? "No, but the thing is I would have given Tony the first one because, I mean, me and him have raced together for a long time but I wasn't gonna give him two of them." IS THIS THE FIRST TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAS HAPPENED BETWEEN YOU TWO GUYS? "No. It's happened before and, I mean, me and Tony have raced together for a long time, so we'll just see what happens." WHAT DID HE SAY WHEN HE STUCK HIS HEAD INSIDE THE CAR? "Nothing that I can say right now."
JEREMY MAYFIELD --12-- Mobil 1 Taurus (Finished 15th) -- "It wasn't bad. We started out and got a little loose and got behind. We had to pit early and got some laps down and then you know how that goes. We just had problems from there. All you can do is keep going and give all you've got. That's what we did and that shows what kind of team we've got."
RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Finished 4th) -- YOU MUST HAVE LOST A TOTAL OF FIVE LAPS AT DIFFERENT TIMES TODAY AND GOT THEM ALL BACK. WHAT ABOUT YOUR DAY? "It's probably one of the hardest days we've had, there's no doubt about that. The car was pretty good. I think we had and easy top three car, I don't know if we had a winning car. I was pushing too much in the center of the corner all day long and then loose up off, but we made a scheduled pit stop and the caution flew -- we lost two there. We got back going again and then we made another scheduled pit stop and lost two again when the caution flew. I'm like, 'Man, will this ever quit?' We just kept losing laps, and finally I started getting 'em back one at a time at different points during the race. And, right there at the end, we didn't put tires on, which I thought was the wrong call, but Robin made the right call by keeping me out on those old tires. Me and Burton got gone and we got that last lap back and got back around there. I started reeling 'em in and then it was just a matter of getting the right breaks. There were a bunch of cars that got racing really hard in turn one. I had four sticker tires and when they had their misfortune I got underneath 'em and got up to fourth and that's the way it ended." TELL US ABOUT THAT LAST PIT STOP CALL. "Robin kept me out to get that lap back and, I've gotta tell you, my hat's off to him because I disagreed with that call because it put a bunch of guys on my bumper with fresh tires and I thought I'd be in trouble. But, it didn't work out that way. We got gone and got that lap back, and then at the end, it was time to put the four tires on and everything went good."
HUT STRICKLIN --58-- Federated Auto Parts Taurus (Finished 14th) -- "We had a really good car today and everybody worked their tails off. We got behind first-round qualifying and put our heads to the grindstone in qualifying and got in the race second-round quickest. We worked awfully hard during Happy Hour yesterday and got the car really good in long runs and we felt like we'd be pretty good. We kind of ran there and I felt like we had a top five car at many times during the day. My times were a lot faster than the leader at times and I just couldn't seem to get the track position. We were running top 10 there with about four to go and the 12 car ran in the back of me going into one and spun me out. He was a lap behind me and we weren't even racing for a position. I felt like it was a cheap shot and maybe Monday I might feel differently, but right now, I was pretty hot at him. I guess it's only natural. We worked too hard to have a top-five, top-10 car today to have it all blow up there with four laps to go. But we've got a great race team, great motors and one of the best race teams I've ever been with. Hopefully, we can just put all this behind us and we're going to Charlotte. That's what our goal is now." DESPITE THE SPIN, YOU ONLY LOST FOUR SPOTS FROM 10TH TO 14TH SO IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE, RIGHT? "It could have, but, like I said, we were a top 10 car and I actually thought better. That's where we were gonna finish, but circumstances happen."
DALE JARRETT --88-- Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus (Finished 10th) -- "It was tough. We had something happen early with the valve stem. We had a good race car. It was unfortunate that we had that happen. We just weren't good enough on fresh tires to run with the guys to ever get our lap back, but that's what's so neat about these guys that we work with. They just keep on working and we got a top 10. Some of the other guys have a few problems and it worked out for us, so one more race marked off." YOU WORKED EVERY LAP IN THAT ONE DIDN'T YOU? "Yeah. I feel 500 laps worth of it here today. But, man, what a great call by Jeff Gordon and those guys. I congratulate them, but we had to work hard to get this top 10 and it worked out for us. Now we just go to Charlotte next week and try to win." TALLADEGA IS AFTER THAT, BUT WAS THIS A TOUGHER RACE FOR YOU THAN TALLADEGA BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T RUN WELL HERE? "Yeah, I think this was definitely the tougher of the two. We know we have a good car for Talladega. We know we can run well there. If we just miss the big wreck we'll be OK." 251 POINTS IS THE UNOFFICIAL LEAD. "Yeah, that sounds nice but we have to keep doing our job."
ROBERT YATES, Car Owner --88-- Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus -- YOU WERE WORRIED ABOUT HERE AND TALLADEGA AND THIS ONE IS BEHIND YOU. "This has probably been our most dreaded track. It's one that...I was up until five o'clock doing shock stuff, not on the shock dyno but in my mind and that wore myself out. I think we've got a good gameplan to come back here next time. We got out of here pretty fortunate." THE 28 HAD A PRETTY INTERESTING DAY. "The 28 car has had a tough time with Martinsville the last couple of years. I wasn't watching it, I didn't see anything. I've raced a long time and don't get involved with that. I've never had drivers that I've had to get involved with that and, hopefully, that will be the same for the future."
