Martin to sport Zerex colors at Darlington

DARLINGTON, S.C. (March 8, 1999) The Zerex antifreeze-coolant brand will be the featured sponsor on Mark Martin's Zerex Ford Taurus in the March 21 TransSouth Financial 400 at Darlington Raceway. Zerex makes the one-race return to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in place of Valvoline, primary sponsor of Martin and the Jack Roush team since 1990. The Valvoline Co. has owned the 50-year-old Zerex brand for five years. The Zerex "starburst" colors were last seen in NASCAR from 1987-1990, carried by the late series champion Alan Kulwicki. With Zerex backing, Kulwicki won two races and 14 pole positions. "Many consumers are unaware that Valvoline purchased the Zerex brand in 1994," said James V. Rocco, senior vice president, operations, the Valvoline Co. "The racing heritage of Valvoline, combined with the history of the Zerex heritage within NASCAR, will generate excitement for racing fans and also build additional brand awareness for Zerex." Martin captured the pole for last year's TransSouth 400 with a speed of 168.665 mph. "I'm glad to be able to bring the Zerex brand name back into NASCAR," said Martin, last year's Winston Cup runner-up. "Everyone at Roush Racing will be working hard to try to win this race for the first time and it would be great to do it with Zerex."
