"We went out first and in the past it seems like that hurt the first car on the track. There was only a 30-minute break after the Busch cars qualified until Cup qualifying. The tire seems a little bit different this year the way it takes off. We didn't scuff tires. It was actually a pretty good spot to qualify. It was coolest then and I felt like it was a good lap."
"It's routine, but it's usually on Friday when they (Busch and Cup qualifying) are together. Not too often do we have qualifying back-to-back in the morning on Saturdays. They had a driver's meeting in between, so it wasn't really routine, but I guess it was similar to how we do it and the track was still good. We had good cars in both series."
"You can both underdrive and overdrive (at NHIS). In qualifying it seems like you can get in the corner a little further and it doesn't seem to hurt you quite as bad, at least that's the way I feel. At the same time you see sometimes you pick up the throttle and you think everything is good. You get off the corner and feel like you should have picked it up a little sooner. I have a problem of maybe not getting back to the throttle as soon as I should have and lose a little time there. I think I did that on my qualifying lap in three and four. I went back down and didn't use up the racetrack on the exit. I think you can do both depending on qualifying or the race."
"I think the gear rule is probably the biggest difference this year, but everybody is on the same gear so it'll be good. You'll need to get good runs off the corners to pass. If the spoiler is an issue and you're a little loose it'll be tough to get a good run. If you can get good forward bite, get a good run and keep your rpm's up as much as possible....."
COMMENTS IMMEDIATELY AFTER QUALIFYING LAP
"It felt pretty good. I slid around a little more than I wanted to, but that wasn't a bad lap for going out first. It hasn't been good in the past to go out first here, but it's changed a little bit. The tires are a little different. Most teams aren't scuffing this year. We went out after Busch qualifying, so it was the same rubber on the racetrack. This is the first time we've run this Dodge Charger since Richmond. It's more of a short track car, but it's definitely a good car. You know you've won in it, but if we can get out of here with a top 10 finish and qualifying in the top five we'll be happy. We need to start getting top 10s each week and get back in the swing of things. We need to have a good second half of the season and get ready for next season so we can start strong. If I had to pick a favorite for the race I think I'd have to pick Tony Stewart. He was real good in practice, but we'll try to give him a run for his money."
