Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion, will be forced to a back-up car after hitting the wall during practice on Friday. Edwards, who is in the Chase for the Nextel Cup for the second time in his three-year NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series career, held his weekly Q&A session before qualifying at New Hampshire International Speedway.

CARL EDWARDS -- No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion

WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE CAR? "The car was really fast. We were extremely fast and that was actually gonna be my last lap. I had been locking up the front brakes into three and that was really the only trouble with the brakes I had, and I just drove into three and stepped on the brakes and wheel-hopped the rears. Once they start hopping, I tried and tried and tried to get them to quit and just slid all the way up and hit the wall -- just hard enough to tear it up enough to go to the back-up car. It's really frustrating for my guys, but they say the back-up car is actually a newer car. Hopefully it doesn't rain out practice. That would be the only thing that would really hurt us for tomorrow."

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE EMOTION IN THE GARAGE RIGHT NOW? "Tensions are high. This doesn't help us at all, but it was a real surprise to me. I venture to say I won't be the last person this weekend to wheel-hop and have trouble. I was just the first one. It's too bad, but tensions are high in the garage. This isn't the best thing for us, but I guarantee we'll have better back-up cars ready. We'll be more prepared because this is definitely an eye-opener."

THIS RACE ISN'T A DEAL BREAKER AS FAR AS WINNING THE CHASE. "No. I know the statistics. I think Jimmie Johnson finished 39th in this race last year. It's really important I think, mentally, to get off to a good start here. Obviously, anytime you have a good race, you get more points. No matter what happens this weekend, at Homestead I don't think this one will be forgotten. I feel like our back-up car is good enough to go out and hopefully win the race and that it's as good as our first car was."

IN THE FIRST RACE HERE 10 OF THE FINAL 13 WERE CHASE GUYS, SO EVERYONE IS GOOD HERE. "Yeah, everybody is gonna be good here. It's gonna be a tough race. This is just a race that if you look at the statistics, all of the guys who are in the chase run well here. It's just gonna be a race you have to run well, go out of here and move on."
